there is a restaurant near me that has a strange set up.

you order your food at the front of the restaurant. they then hand you a ticket, you grab your drinks, and you find yourself a table. once you seat yourself, a waiter comes over, confirms your order, and takes your ticket. the waiter then brings your food, refills your drinks, takes your money or credit card at the end.

so what percentage is a decent tip? they don't take your order at the beginning or explain specials, but they do practically everything else.

You should never tip with change. This is foolish and an insult to those in the service industry. Remember this.

making me seat myself in a restaurant, take my own order, get my own drinks, is an insult to the 'service industry' .. the place sounds like a "high end mcdonalds" ... they're lucky i'd tip at all.

They still need to clean the tables and carry away your dishes presumably. The only thing they don't do is take you to your seats (this is usually the job of the host/hostess anyways, so eliminating his/her role should not affect the tip), and take your order.
How much is taking your order worth? While it's certainly part of waiting tables, I wouldn't take away much from a normal tip, maybe 2-3%. I'm pretty sure their jobs aren't any easier than working at another restaurant, so don't take it out on them.

Sounds like a Pappas Burger restaurant (part of the pappas chains...deux, sitos). I went one time and it was just weird to order up front, get seated by yourself, and then have the waiter/waitress come take your tickets while also asksing you if you want to order anything else.

I hate that kind of service, seems so ass backwards.

Sounds like a place near me called the Bad Waitress. I tip normally because it's not that different. However, I don't tip for places where you get your food at the counter.

Then they deserve nothing. Thank you for reminding me of this. You see, on occasion you will encounter a fattie as your server. The best course of action would be to simply request a new server, however, this is not always possible. Whatever the case, do not tip fatties. Fat people are simply the worst servers imaginable. It's the smell, you see. Fatties tend to have an unusual body odor that is just horrific. It is a mixture of mold and normal body odor. This is because fatties are simply incapable of proper hygiene due to the numerous folds of fat on their disgusting bodies. This alone nullifies any reason you might have to tip them. In short, fatties are disgusting, unclean creatures and they deserve no tip at all. Everyone knows this.

So when did you decide this standard? You mean to tell me that back in the 60's and 70's when folks were tipping with change we were insulting others and were not being PC?

I could understand that if you left a pile of pennies it might be insulting but $2.00 in quarters spends exactly the same as $2.00 in paper money. I guarantee you if I have 2 bills and 8 quarters the tip is going to be in the form of quarters. If you choose to be a tool and take it as an insult that is your problem, not mine. You can always leave the "insult" on the table for someone else to pick up.

uh, yeah, it is pappas burger

they do the same thing at yia yia marys (their greek place)

it allows the kitchen to start making your order while you try to find a table. they turn tables faster that way.

never been to sizzler or ponderosa. i went to ryan's a couple times as a kid and i don't remember them bringing anything to you at all.

the waiters at pappas burger certainly do more than the cashiers at mcdonalds, in terms of waiting.

If someone is taking my order and bringing my food, I tip them. At the place you are describing I would probably tip about half of what I tip at a normal establishment, so maybe between 7.5 and 10%.
