I just got done banging my head against my desk with this damned Poweredge 600sc after installing a 512meg stick of Crucial ECC registered ram. It kept coming up with a message saying "Your system is limited to 256MB of memory!" and I tried everything to fix it. I finally called Crucial and they couldn't figure it out either, so they were RMAing the stick.

Well as I was on the phone I looked in the manual (what a concept!) and figured out that if you have the "OS install mode" enabled in the BIOS, it only gives you 256megs of memory. To access the rest of your memory, just disable that feature.

I went ahead and called Crucial Support back with this info and they said they'd add it to their knowledge base. The guy I talked to says that they've been getting lots of these lately and no one ever told them how they fixed it.

Anyway, just a tip for you 600sc owners.

Manuals are for little boys! Real men don't read the manuals!

....just kidding--same thing happened to me, except on the 1600SC. It's amazing what you can learn in those little books.

Actually, I had a 256M ECC nonregistered module. When I put it in with the OS install option set, it recognized 256 total. So I thought it had something to do with my trying to shove the wrong module in. Later when I actually read the manual (to figure out how to on the PERC/4im Raid), I saw the OS install thing and changed it. It actually read the full 384M (128M ECC registered + 256M ECC non). I left it this way for about two months, until I could afford to pick up a proper 512M ECC registered module.
