TIP: Don't fall for the OC version or superclock!

When vendors give OC out of the box, all that means is they changed the voltage at the factory and OCed video card a bit.

Dont fall for that. Do it yourself

my card is Vanilla , on purpose,, cuz I wanted control over voltage and OC that I want, plus its less expensive...
and you can see my sigrig I OCed the busheshezeees out of this card. heheh 😀😱

blanket statements such as that are never representative of the entire population.

some cards like msi lightning or the frozr versions are completely redesigned for the explicit purpose of supporting the oc. some cards *may* get cherry picked components. and then others are like you say: vanillas with a bit of oc and voltage tweak.

yeah. a lot of factory OC cards come with nice aftermarket coolers to support their OC and your expected OC of their OC 🙂

If I was going to overclock a GPU I would really think hard about buying a factory overclocked one with improved cooler rather than putting my own together. Assuming the cooler was worth it and the price wasn't too much higher, it seems the less painful path. Especially if vendors are binning the GPU's.

If your planning on overclocking your gpu, there is every reason to think about buying a OC/SC version. No two GPUs are exactly the same and these boards have been stressed at the factory and proven to run stable at higher clock speeds. There is nothing keeping you from pushing them further, but at least you have a good starting point.

Is it necessary pay the OC/SC premium to overclock? Absolutely not. But if your overclocking then chances are you realize that quality hardware is sometimes worth a few extra dollars.

I think the blue PCBs are much more effective in cooling since blue is a cool color. If you have a red PCB color you're going to over heat and cause lots of problems. Black? Forget about it. And green? Only if you're some hippy tree hugger.

that was actually what i meant by aftermarket cooler. sorry. i should have said non-reference cooler instead. 🙂

Uh... a factory OC'd GPU is not always overvolted too. My MSI 460 GTX OC cyclone shipped at stock volts 1.012V just like many other stock and OC'd boards.

What PCB colour is currently in season ? Looking to pick up a new card and need a quality board.

Keep an eye out for purple. I hear that due to the cost of purple dye its use is reserved for the top of the line quality boards.

You'd be a fool not to recommend the more robust power/cooling arrangements where you can find them if the price is within reason. Not all of them are just simple change's in the BIOS.

I think we need to bring back the gold/copper colored PCBs of the 90's.....I heard the quality was much better.

I gots me 2 eVGA GTX 460 1GB that are factory overclocked to 763/1526/1900 using stock volts but I can only get to 860/1720/2200 at 1.012 volts so just because yer card is factory overclocked doesn't mean yer gonna gits alot more outta 'er, know what I'm sayin?

Did you taste your card to make sure it was vanilla? How do you know it's not white chocolate? I hear they substitute them without stating as such. You should RMA it just to be sure.
