Tip calculator/card

My mom overtips all the time. It drives me nuts. The thing is, she overtips on small check and undertips on large checks.

She recently left a $10 tip for a $30 check. But was confused why I was leaving so much ($8) on a $60 check. The service sucked on the $60 check so I did in the 10-15% range.

Anyways ... she has no idea what she is doing. I need to get her a tip calculator or a tip card. I might laminate some printed out sheets that say:
$10 - $1, $1.50, $2 for bad, normal and superior service
$20 - $2, $3, $4

Something along these lines. Anyone know where something like this is for sale?

Double the check, move decimal point left one place and round to nearest dollar for everything other than shit service. Great service round up, always. Maybe that is too complicated for your mom though.

Any bets on how many posts in this thread will devolve into a tipping debate?

I just wish that the mindset that everyone deserves a tip would be eliminated. Tips are intended for great service and people going above and beyond their job. For some odd reason tips are now for everyone.

My first thought as well.

That is easier, but im a cheap bastage and tip 15%. Makes the math just a smidge harder lol

I don't get what's so complicated about calculating the tip.

if the bill was $XYZ.##, take XY, double it, and add it to the total. round up/down or add/subtract a couple bucks depending on service.

I usually take what was charged in taxes and double it.

Also, if your mom has a mobile device of any kind,... there is an app or, a built in calculator.

i'm certain jerboy made a similar thread

If I had a nickel for every one of these threads that's been created in the past year, I would be able to tip the folks that the cheap bastards in this thread left high and dry!

Is this a troll thread? I have no problem with a $10 tip* on a $30 bill if the service is very good, or it's a place that has cheap meals (especially the latter, if it's not a chain type of place.) Should an excellent waitress get significantly less money simply because a great meal at her restaurant is $10, rather than $40 at another restaurant with the same fare? If the food was excellent, and the service was great, $10 seems quite reasonable as a starting point for a tip for a meal for 2 people.

You said the service sucked, so maybe she did think $8 was too much for shitty service.

In NYC, if I get good service, I double the tax amount for the tip. Simple math.

How about divide by 7 (14%)
Divide by 6 (17%)
Divide by 5 (20%)
Divide by 4 (25%)

Is single digit division... 4th grade stuff... too difficult to do in your head?

I tip completely on a scale of what I feel is deserved, screw the % scale. If I think service is good I have no problems leaving 30-40%, but if its bad I have no qualms leaving a single penny just to make sure they know I didnt forget.

Tipping to me is about service, when its good I compensate accordingly, when its bad, I also compensate accordingly, you dont get any certain % just for showing up and doing the bare minimum.

10% is really easy to calculate: $150 bill 10% = $15, for excellent service I just double that for $30.

For adequate service add 1/2 of the 10% $15 + $7.50 = $22.50.

I have never felt the need to use a calculator to do this math.

Do you guys really need a calculator to do such simple fucking math? Use your heads!

I do what any reasonable person with OCD does: I add in the percentage (always an even number, btw) that I feel is appropriate and then add an additional amount to have it equal exactly a number I like (again, always even and always an exact dollar).

Holy shit. My mom is 80 and doesn't know how to tip properly at age 80. At this, point .... I want her to have a damned card or calculator or something. If math were the issue, I wouldn't be posting here. Did I mention she is 80? She needs something that takes arguments of bill and ranking of service (poor to excellent) and gives a tip amount.

She is 80 and does not have a smartphone or cell phone for that matter.

Index Card.

Write down amounts in 5-10 dollar increments.

Write expected tip next to those increments.

Done.
