"The most powerful computer known is the brain, and now scientists have designed a machine just a few molecules large that mimics how the brain works.

So far the device can simultaneously carry out 16 times more operations than a normal computer transistor. Researchers suggest the invention might eventually prove able to perform roughly 1,000 times more operations than a transistor."

IPC might be impressive, but clockrates will be dismal. Couple that with reliability questions and you got yourself the current situation with lack of market acceptance of existing quantum computers.

The day may come, but not in my lifetime.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. I still remember reading about Bill Gates saying "640K ought to be enough for anybody.", when asked about system RAM in the future. Since my computer at that time had 16KB of system RAM, I sure didn't think that was a crazy statement, like it sounds today.* It might only take one advance/breakthrough/idea to make all of the current reasons why it isn't possible or feasible today vanish.






*Bill Gates claims he never actually made that statement, and that may very well be true. This page has a link to the NY Times article where he said he didn't, but the link is no longer valid, although it has the relevant excerpt, seemingly in it's entirety.
