Legal in New Yorkto have tinted side windows. Why would you want them on the fron and back. I doubt if very many states allow those.

a tinting shop will be fined $10K and the tinter can go to jail for illegaly tinting over the state maximum tint.

So if you don't know someone you'll probably get a legal tint at any of the shops.

(Limos are exempt from this law)

I also want to know - what are you hiding?

Anyway tinting is only illegal to a point. You can tint I think all of your windows to a certain tint level and then it becomes illegal after that. You can probably make back and rear passenger as dark as you want (I see it all the time), but your window and front passenger can't be that dark and windshield has to be very visible for others.

15% all around (Cept windshield) is a nice dark tint that you can actually see through at night.

5% is limo tint, you'll have to stick your head out of the window to back up at night.

Cops will bust your ass. Fine + Proof of removal receipt $$$ and you'll have to retint. I hear in texas they razor blade your tint on the spot.

It's true. They will remove it on the spot if they are in a bad mood.

tinting looks good on any care. Period.

A good 15 or 20% tint makes ANY car look so much better. Plus it reduces summer time heat, and the sun , as you know, damages your interior over the years.

Remember. Metallic Tint, Lumar(best) or 3M.

You see the mexi-tinting places use dye-based tints? Notice all those cars with bubbles and purple tint? Cheap dye-based tints. Avoid them like the plague.

Lumar tint is lifetime warranty against fading/discoloration.

<< i saw it on a movie >>

Exactly. Closed course, they can do whatever they want to, pretty much. Your front windshield won't be able to be tinted much anywhere, sorry. There are more restrictive limits on windshield tints because you have to be able to see out of it.

<< why would it be illegal?? i dont get it >>

A wee bit short sighted aren't we? You want tint so no one can see in and you ask why its illegal? Its illegal because police can't see in. An office wants to be able to look through your rear window when he pulls you over to be sure you aren't reaching for a gun, and be sure of the same thing as he walks up to your window!

And of course its not easy to see out of at night. This isn't a 2 way mirror or magic coloring. If you have 5% tint, you're not gonna be able to back up in a parking lot without putting your head out the window or 100w KC Daylighters on the rear bumper 15% if the max I'd want on any window I look out of. I've never heard of anyone tinting their whole windshield either, you might do a sunstrip at the top but never the whole thing. Mainly because you can't see out of it easily.

I was down in Puerto Rico a couple years ago for spring break. We were in the center of some small town on a Sunday afternoon, some sort of festival was going on or some such nonsense. A car club was there, I won't get into how the styles differ from the US to Puerto Rico, but some were far out. A few, like 5 or 6, had the entire windshield tinted except for about a 3" strip in the middle. Looked pretty silly if you ask me.

I live in Maine, and a friend recently had his car done. They did a great job, and also gave him all kinds of paperwork to prove that he is legal. It was done in Portland, sorry I don't know which company. You do want to be real careful with who you get to do it, many just don't care if their work is legal or not.
