Tinted windows everywhere, how do they pass inspection?

A lot of states have a limit on how dark the window can be. Where I am from the window has to let through at least 35% light. Otherwise it's illegal. They check it with some type of light gun.

I bought a used car once that had a horribly dark tint (5-10%?)
Minnesota state trooper issued a warning

Heh. What pisses me off is tint on the windshield and front row windows. That = no-no, unless you're government.

Front row windows? You mean the driver and front passenger windows? Tint is allowed on those windows in many states.

Yes. In fact, many vehicles, particularly vans, WILL NOT have back windows AT ALL. Heh, so it makes sense that you'd be allowed to prevent any amount of light from entering.

In PA apparently they don't specify what level of tint you can have.

PA STATE INSPECTION PROCEDURES Section 175.80
(2) Check glazing.
(i) Check glazing and REJECT IF any of the following apply:
(A) Approved safety glazing is not used in every windshield, window or wing.
(B) Any sign, poster or other non-transparent material obstructs, obscures or impairs driver's clear view of highway or any intersecting highway. See Appendix C.
(C) Non-transparent material extends more than 3 inches from lowest exposed portion of rear window, rear side windows or rear wings. See Appendix C.
(D) Motor vehicle has any sign, poster or other non-transparent material on windshield or front side windows, other than officially approved and properly located parking stickers.
(E) Glass is shattered or broken or has any exposed sharp edges.
(F) Windshield is removed.
(G) There are any defects in acute area of windshield,-center of critical area on driver's side of vehicle directly in driver's normal line of vision, 8 _ inches wide and 5 1/2 inches high-or discolorations or hazardous cracks to front, right, left, or rear of driver which would interfere with driver's vision. See Appendix C.
(H) Class etchings, except those used for identification, are on windshield or front side windows.
(I) Glass etchings extend more than 3 inches

Thanks for the linkage dartworth

Edit.... Hmmm maybe Appendix C specifies tint...

/runs off to get PA vehicle code...

True. But it still bothers me to an extent that you cannot believe

You just show that its factory tint and the ticket is dropped. That said, I've never been ticketed in LA. Got my car tinted two years ago I think. Fronts are pretty light and fairly dark around the back.

Just curious... why does it bother you so much? I have tint on my front windows and love it.

Hrmmm. Since I'm looking into some new tint for my van - do you think it fits any of these exceptions?

(6) The use of sunscreen material on windows behind the driver in
trucks, buses, trailers, mobile homes, campers, multipurpose vehicles,
charter buses, funeral service vehicles, or limousines provided that
said vehicle is equipped with two (2) outside mirrors, one on each side,
if said mirrors meet federal standards adjusted so the driver has a clear
view of the highway behind the vehicle.

I think I have a decent argument for it being a truck, or maybe a camper.

I'm honestly not sure, maybe I'm just jealous because mine aren't.

THere's tons of sites stating tinting laws. Funny enough, they seem to differ from each other and are never up to date. I ask a friend of mine who customizes Maximas and he tells me absolutely no tint is legal in NY state. I ask the place that does car stereos (and tinting) and they act like it's perfectly fine... and wanted $350 for the silver fade "reflective" tint. I see plenty of beemers with it - and I hardly think they've been stopped... still deciding if I should risk it.

Well, call the state police and ASK. I'm sure they'd be glad to hear from someone trying to avoid getting a ticket, instead of someone trying to get out of one.

Ugh, that reflective tint drives me nuts. Thank god its illegal in Cali.
