So I moved to RI a couple of years ago and have avoided getting a state inspection until now. Come to find out RI has THE crappiest tint law. Basically, to pass you must have 70% light transference. Most cars are up to this spec from the production line. In other words, ANY tint on your car will make it fail (which means no passing state inspection and possible $250 fine if you get ticketed).
So I've been struggling with the decision of either finding someone to pass my vehicle state inspection (illegally) or removing the tint. Though I hate to do it, I decided to go the legal route.
(Sidenote: You CAN get a waiver with a medical condition. I have Marfan Syndrome and one of the symptoms is sensitivity to light. However, to get a waiver, your doctor must fill out the proper form. It goes before a board that meets ONCE A MONTH to determine if you are eligible. In the state I used to live in (MO), all you needed was a doctor's note. I tried that first until I learned about the review board, etc. I can't wait for another month as I got a ticket for Suspended Registration, due to not getting a state inspection. It's a "Must Appear In Court Ticket". Also, in RI you get your registration and plates before you have your car inspected.)
I was a bit nervous about peeling the tint (you can scratch the glass, ruin the rear defroster, etc.) and decided tomorrow was D-Day. Of course I got impatient and decided to see what I was in for, since I can't sleep.
I used our garment steamer (which we had received for Christmas) and had a side window done in about 15 minutes! (TY Google) There was no problem with tearing, glue removal, etc. It was like peeling off a fruit rollup.
I'm relieved, but still pissed about the ridiculous hoops this state makes you go through for something so simple. I can't wait to get the hell out of here.
CLIFFS
1) Moved from another state with tinted windows (35%) on my car.
2) Current state has (what amounts to) a no tint law.
3) Got ticketed because I never got state inspection, and thus had a suspended registration.
4) Need to resolve by Tuesday (my court date), either removing tint or finding a shady inspection place.
