Timing dif between 1GB and 512mb sticks

I have a system where memory runs substantially faster when running 2 x 1gb sticks of PC3200 vs the same brand of 2x512mb sticks.

It runs even slower when I put in all 4 sticks (3gb total)

Is the problem the mixing of size sticks ? Each are in there proper dual channel slots. Or is it the memory ?
 
When all 4 slots are filled, the memory controller has to drop the timings from 1T to 2T. If you have a A64 system, it will lose some speed. But not enough to be worried about...
