1996 lexus es300

yea i need a timing belt, alternator belt, and one other belt i forget what he said it was called but $20 nonetheless, oh and a water pump. plus labor... is $800 a fair quote? thats what i received. Thanks

edit: is it true that its not a good idea to put a new water pump in without also installing a timing belt?

I was quoted over $800 from the shop I usually go to so I found another Honda/Acura specialist.

I paid $550 for my Timing Belt, Water Pump, 3 drive belts & Idler pulley but the quality of work was very subpar. On the drive home the damn thing almost over heated because they did not bleed the coolant system, I noticed a dent in my hood the next morning and a week later my radiator sprung a leak (they removed it when they were working on the car)

I just did the same thing on my 97 Honda Accord for $600. (At a Honda employee service center)

The biggie is probably the timing belt. Automakers seem to want to put those in the most craptastic position sometimes.

Yeah, for some reason they want the timing belt to actually be able to drive the camshaft. Crazy idea, I know.

very good, including parts and labour.

dealership wants 14 hours worth of labor for my 01 1.8t jettas!

I met a kid online and paid him 200$ for it instead...took him 2 hours and we did everything, water pump, timing belt, serpentine, tensioors, pulley, water pump....even had time to do my valve cover gasket and cam tensioner....and he made a quick buck :D

damn, $200 doesn't include parts right? that's still a pretty good deal

for my past two 4 bangers cars (Celica, Civic) a timing belt + h20 pump = $450 parts and labor.

damn thats really cheap... the guy said that hes not sure whether he would need just a timing belt, or a timing belt kit ($120 difference).. so the price for mine might come out to around $680 if he doesn't need the kit. though he won't know til he opens it up. i was a bit confused to if he was going to wait and open it up to order the parts or just order it.. so i might just be stuck with the 800 dollar price. he said some of the belts for lexus are expensive =/ still kinda sucks putting 800 dollars into a car with ~160k miles on it. i hope it will at least run for another 40k or 1 year after i get this work done.

I have a V6 Honda Accord. The shop quoted me $650 just to do the timing belt/water pump. I went online and bought all the parts including timing belts, water pumps, alternator belts, accessory belts, and 6 OEM NKG plugs for $280. Paid my mechanics $150 to put it all in for a grand total of $430.

it was 200$ for the parts and I gave the guy 200$ because I learned a hell of a lot watching and helping him do it.

I had to get all OEM parts so parts were pretty expensive. I hate putting crap in my car :p...so I stick OEM if not better...

I opted to get EVERYTHING because I was afraid of the crap plastic water propellers they use sometimes in cars....they can frag off and get stuck everywhere in the engine....luckily it was plastic, as it justified doing this :)...nothing broke off into it though, thank god!

There is actually a very good reason they do that on the VW cars. Think of it this way, if an impeller were to break (which they are designed to do under stress) what would you rather have happen:

1.) Brass impeller seizes or otherwise stops spinning and shreds your timing belt or otherwise causes it to jump teeth (broken timing belt on a 1.8T = new head)

2.) Plastic impeller breaks off and you overheat (slightly) and you replace the $100 part and go about your business....

Take your pick, tow and a new pump + labor = ~$500 or new/rebuilt 1.8T head... $1000...

Other belt you are thinking of is probably for power steering pump, its a very small v belt. The ribbed serpentine belt usually only drives the alternator and AC compressor on Toyota engines with a separate v belt for the power steering pump driven directly by the crank pulley.

You don't *have* to do a timing belt when you put in a water pump. It's just a good idea since it's a pain to get to all that stuff and you might as well do it all at the same time since it's all in the same place, and it's only a $30 belt.

Toyota water pumps are usually metal impellers, but the bearing life is about the same service interval as the timing belt and the only real concern is shaft slop and annoying knocking/ticking sounds as a result.

If you've got a lot of miles, say 100k+, might as do all the front seals also (front main crank seal, cam seal, oil pump seal) since they are right there. Usually you can get a timing cover kit that has all the seals, timing belt, timing cover gasket, tensioner, everything under the timing cover all in one set.

As for the labor? Having to pull all those brackets, mounts, pulleys, timing cover, etc, off with 1" of clearance to the inside of the fender isn't very fun, and you usually have to have it on a lift up and down numerous times to tackle the upper and lower portions separately. 10 lbs of shit in a 5 lb bag.

yup, for my celica, one timing belt + h20 pump lasted me a little bit over 100k mile. (I was lucky, one of the propeller/fan eroded and broke off... and got lost in the radiator, rust was everywhere...)

Gizmo,

You may want to consolidate your threads. You already have two threads on-going about your car drama.
