Looks like RR will be offering 6Mb down / 512 Kb up 'premium' service through Time Warner service. 6Mb down is pretty sweet, but 512Kb up is "meh" (not bad, but not great either).

To immitate Jokersmoker:

Enjoy! ;)

Is upload that much worse than download?
In the UK, SDSL (512/512) is about as much as 2048/256 ADSL, it's stupid.
Is upload that much different ISP side to download?

Upload does come at much greater expense than download. The ISP have to pay more for upload than download.

Also, cable technology means that if you saturate the upload, the download comes to the same speed, and there is less upload capacity overall compared to download capacity.

That is why they are not providing such good upload speeds, plus the fact that most people don't need it.

Upload/Download doesn?t cost any more to the ISPs, its pretty much all the same to them. The reason behind the lower upload caps is that if upload speeds are saturated, then when other users are trying to surf the web, etc, the ACK packets needed to acknowledge that a packet was received are severely delayed. If you think about it, one or two people using BitTorrent would cause a ton of problems for an ISP. Since upload speeds aren't really unneeded, unless you are running a server of some kind (which is often against the TOS of your ISP), there is no need for high upload speeds.

EDIT: Most ISPs dont buy ASymetrical bandwidth. They would buy a DS3, etc, which is ~45Mbps up and down.

You think you have it bad???

Insight is 3mb down and 128kb up.

If I want to pay a more than $30 premium over the $45 standard charge, I can get a whoping 384kb up.

How's that for suck?

I'm using 3m/384k RR right now... it's fine for me, not gonna spend the extra $$ for that upgrade.
