When I watch cable TV without a cable box (in my home office, for example), I get some digital and HD channels. However, those channels (over No. 77) are numbered like 104-341, 133-185, etc. but the numbers do not seem to have much of a pattern or correspond to the "actual" channel numbers.

I can get the new MLB Network on the cable box, but I have no way of knowing what the crazy channel number would be on my office TV. The Time Warner website is no help.

Does anyone know what channel MLB Network is on in LA on Time-Warner (without the cable box)?

So I finally got through to Time-Warner on the phone and asked them about it.

They said that, if you do not have a cable box, you only get channels 2-99, so no MLB Network - it's on 261.

I said, "Um, no, I get Discovery HD on 125-191 and other such channels."

He says, "Oh, well, if you are getting those dash ('-') channels they are being picked up by your tuner from another source, not from us."

I ask, "So, those dash channels are not coming from you, i.e. not through the cable? But, I do not have an antenna - all I have plugged into the TV is the cable." (BTW, I get all my local channels on this TV through a dash channels (2-1, 4-1, 5-1, 7-1, 9-1, 11-1 and 13-1.)

He says, "Yes, those are not from us. Your TV is picking those up from somewhere else."

BTW, I previously had tried an "HD antenna" and it did not pick up sh*t.

So, what gives?
