Hi all. I am moving from Manhattan where I am currently using RCN for cable, phone and high-speed internet. I will be in Brooklyn and RCN does not service the area I am moving to. I HAVE to use Timewarner which offers cable, phone and internet also (even if its half the speed of RCN :( ). Anyway, with TWC I have the option of 2 ISPs, one is Roadrunner and the other is Earthlink. Both only offer 5mbps down and up to 384 Kbps up (shudder). I pretty much ruled out Earthlink as they would have to put a dish somewhere. But, according to Roadrunner highspeed cable I would have to pay an extra 5 bucks per IP address. So, according to their policy, if I had a hub and 2 people where on I would get charged another 5 bucks. My question is this, I use RCN now and get 10 mbps, I have a Wi-fi access point and all of my PCs and laptops can use the internet at the sametime because they all have wireless cards. If I just have them come in, set up some POS pc with the cable, can't I just hook up my acccess point, plug their one cat5 cable to that and use all my other wireless pcs and laptops? The access point is proving DHCP IP addresses to the pcs, so in reality I ams still only using 1 IP address from Roadrunner. Anyone in the NY area know it this is just Roadrunner trying to make $$$ or do you think they will know I am using an access point? Thanks.

Using a router is not going to be a problem. They only charge the extra fee if you want to use more than the allotted (1 I am assuming) external IP addresses.

Yes, you can use a router with RoadRunner or any other ISP. From their perspective you're only subscribing to one IP address; how you split it is up to you.

BTW, Earthlink through TWC runs through the same cable lines; there's no dish required. I don't think there's much of an advantage for Earthlink over RoadRunner.
