Yes, the 939* is basically new. AMD is trying to phase out the 754's. Or so I hear.

You changed that right before I responded. Sorry. :<
Weellll...if you're going for socket 939, then there are more possibilities. I suggest the AMD 64 3500+, but even if you go for the 3200+, you'll be getting GREAT performance. I'm not much for overclocking, but I'd assume you could overclock the 3200+ to match or at least get near the 3500+ if you don't have much money to spend (somebody who has more expertise can back up or negate this claim).

Here are some motherboards I suggest:

Or

If you're going the SLI route:

Or
(if you're an overclocker) http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=13-136-151&depa=0

939, AMD is making better chips right now I would go with them. I would get a 3200+ winchester good price/performance value and its on the 90nm tech so t runs cooler and with less voltage. when you upgrade you also have to make the choie of pci-x or sticking with agp.

Well I sold my P4 3.6gHz with MSI Neo-3 board in favor of my current CPU and mobo.
I am VERY happy i did. I could fry an egg on tha 3.6! yikes!

i think i will get this one,

Now to pick a MOBO..

Take your pick of motherboard
DFI LANPARTY nF4 SLI-DR
ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI

My vote goes to the DFI even though it's ugly.

He can't go with any of those. The nForce4 Chipset is PCI-Express x16 only. So his AGP video card would be incompatible with those.

He said best, so I gave him the best. 😛

That soltek board would be a decent choice. But it would be wiser to sell your 9700 pro and get a new midrange PCIe

If your ok with nVidia the 6600GT is a great midrange choice
If you like ATi the X700 is great and will best the 6600GT for the really high bandwidth stuff like 1600x1200 4xAA 8xAF

No you DON'T have to sell your AGP card. MSI neo2 platinum or Gigabyte. There are MANY boards, but those two are AGP and nforce3.
