Thinking about upgrading my old 7800 GTX , what would be best performance/price upgrade? The system is an AMD Opt 185 with Asus a8n32 deluxe. Any thoughts are appreciated

thx

Ya was looking those 8800 GT look good, anyone know where to get them in stock anywhere ?

It's kind of luck of the draw, but you can find them... I went by my local Fry's (Seattle/Renton) last Thursday, and they had about 10-15 XFX 8800GT Alpha Dogs ($279) on the shelf. Expect to play close to $300 pretty much anywhere you find one though... They simply aren't going for the $250 MSRP.

Get the 3870. Even a 3850 would be a serious improvement for not a lot of $$.

The 8800GT is great, but with your cpu, it doesn't make sense to spend an extra $75 on the GT.

ya 8800gt seems good, which model? since seems to be out most places. any of them im sure is nice upgrade over my old one. Anyone have any thoughts

thx

I'd be a bit partial to EVGA due to their generous warranty (allows for OC'ing and I believe fan modification without voiding it) and the step-up program, if you had an intention to get this card as a stop-gap and see what the 9-series has to offer in February in about three months.

my last few cards have been evga and havent had any issues so i am also partial, my current 7800gtx is EVGA and it runs like champ. I use at 42' Scepter 1080P lcd for my monitor so i like running everything in 1080p, im thinking newer stuff now is going to tax that old 7800 so looking for christmas present 🙂

We'd tell you if we knew. 8800GTs came out in very limited quantities, so it's going to be very hard to find one, even for us, if any.

thx
Seems only one avail right now is the
EVGA Geforce 8800GT Superclocked 512MB 256bit GDDR3 PCI-Express 2.0 HDCP & SLI Ready Video Card Retail 512-P3-N802-A1

model which is at 650 mhz core. That should be good enough for me i think. Anyone know of any issue using that in my Asus a8n32 deluxe board ?

Seems like couple places have it in stock, if that looks like it ill prob order it so can get it for the weekend maybe

thx

I bought from clubit two weeks ago when I needed a replacement card for my sons machine. They were high but they were in stock. I got in on the dell buy myself which is supposed to ship next week. The msi cards in that deal were $207 each plus tax with free shipping so for $446 I got two 8800gt's. Compare that to the $302 I paid for a single card from clubit and it's a super good deal. I always said that I'd never go sli however with the graphics demanding games coming out and the outrageous prices of the gtx's I went the cheaper more powerful route.

cant tell if that one is in stock. Does anyone have any idea if any issue with these 8800GT and my Asus MB ?

"On the other hand, the user may have compatibility problems that have been reported by some mainboard manufacturers, for example ASUS. This problem may occur to owners of mainboards that support PCI Express 1.0/1.0a whereas mainboards with PCI Express 1.1 should be perfectly compatible with the new graphics cards." - Xbitlabs

Contact Asus technical support or post on the Asus forum directly to see if anyone with your board has any issues with 8800GTs or 3870s.

i saw newegg had the 8800GT KO one instock so i ordered that one. Im only running single and looking at research listed doesnt seem like this is an issue with a8n32-sli deluxe.

Thx for the info, hope to get it by end of week 🙂

New batch of 8800GT's is coming out; seems the original design has 2 small of a fan on the refrence/stock cooler and under load they were ramping up to full speed to keep cool. Word is that the new design, diameter change from 65mm to 75mm, only drops temps by a few degrees. Not sure if it's enough of a drop to keep the fans from running full tilt though.
