Well this is an invitation for all to say "pfffffffft i used to walk to school through flaming lava pits, that's not hot - and I did it while eating suicide wings and pouring tabasco sauce in my eyes" but anyway...

Some kind of motor in our furnace started overheating and stinking up the house, we noticed it Wednesday night when we got home. Smelled as if something was burning.

Turns out that this motor powers a fan which pumps air through the house and is also integral to the central air system, so basically our nice cool central air is pooched. Just so happens that it has been 30C (~90F) ++ for a few days straight and the heatwave isn't about to let up. The warranty is covering the parts, but not the labour - sure enough it costs $80/hr for the guy to come and fix it and he can't come until TUESDAY... agh!

Is this common? Our home (and furnace) is still 2 years young. The brand is Armstrong. I looked at the furnace filter - it looks pretty dirty and I'm thinking maybe that little motor was working too hard and croaked? Anyway, thanks for reading.

cliffs: no central air until Tuesday and it's hotter than hell's kitchen.

Hang yourself.

My AC died a labor day weekend a few years back. Sucked. In miami at the time, it was 90+. AWFUL. Slept in the car one night it was so uncomfortable for me.

You could buy a window unit for one room if you're REALLY desperate, otherwise I'd say you're SOL unless you can get the new fan faster and do it yourself.

Man, i remember the blackout a few years back that had most of NE US and Ontario affected... not only did we not have AC, we didn't even have power to get fans going.

Sounds like its time to check into a motel for a few days. That or shack up with some friends/family who have AC. :)

It sure is hot here in SouthWestern Ontario. It was 34 C for the last couple days here in London.

Our central air is working great, once I changed the filtre. :p

Haha, I was visiting Toronto during that blackout, but I happened to be in Niagra for the day. As it turns out Niagra was the only place in the area with any kind of power, so I ended up staying for 2 days in a nice air conditioned hotel room.

Yeah that was something eh?

It gets bad under those conditions. Best bet is to find a large body of water.

Well, thanks for the replies guys. It's not bad right now although it's still 27C. Gladly we're not in the thick of summer where the humidity is even more outrageous.

Hopefully it gets hotter later...  ;)
