Pretty much IGN posted a really interesting article that I thought clears up a lot of rumors and brings about some good points.

Pretty much after reading this article I wont talk so much crap about PS3 and how it shall own XBOX 360...

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/617/617951p1.html

However we have to realize that this is MICROSOFTS data here and obviously will be slanted...but still...didnt know the XBOX had such a big punch

Also we can only truly measure a system's greatness when we are able to hands-on enjoy it and also see how well 3rd party developers take use of it. A truly great system needs to be backed by truly great games...not power

After watching both the Sony Conference and the Microsoft conference, I can say I would bet the Xbox 360 totally owns the PS3.

Why? The Xbox is already outselling the PS2 in America, according to the conference speakers. The Xbox 360 will be launching earlier than the PS3, with 6 games alone from EA. Just between EA and Square Enix you pretty much get half the console fanboys in the world begging for a 360. It's a done deal.

You know the Sony conference showed the Cell proc being slightly faster than the Xbox's multicore proc. The graph they showed however was a comparison of next gen consoles to current day computers, not showing how the Cell is better. Microsoft didn't seem to show any charts at all, their conference was mostly marketing and PR, very little technical.

The processors are so different, it's hard to guage how one is better than the other for gaming itself. The Xbox seems more like a computer, and thus needs more power for the overhead. I don't think a consumer can really use these numbers to make a decision, in the end it comes down to the games anyway. That's where the Xbox wins.

It is definately true that it is all about the video games. Who cares if the graphics are marginally better? Developers are going to provide games to the system that has sold the most consoles. Games like GTA3 could have been more advanced and better looking if released exclusively for XBox (and PC). The extra hardware power had better go into better use than just fancy graphics, that's judging the book by its cover. Give me a game where I can make my own doors by blowing holes in the wall, and improvising on the fly. Red Faction on a whole new level. Some of the demos showing physically correct explosions are cool and look neat, but a mere novelty unless they can find to make it fun. GTA type environments where you can go into buildings and take fights to any floor and level the building in the process - now that would be something never done before and very fun - like mixing GTA, Red Faction, and Blast Corps. all in one.

These systems aren't even out yet. How can you make any sort of decision of which is better? You can hypothetically say which one may be better, but it's still a hypothesis. Even if one system is slightly better <or even marginally> than the other performance wise, I have to fully agree with bunnyfubbles - pretty flowers make a game not.

The only thing you can make an argument for at this point is, which system looks aesthetically better.

Yeah, it sucks that people get too caught up in the power or specifications or touted/hyped abilities of the system. Its the titles that make the system great. PS1/2 lead their generations despite being the slowest hardware of those generations. How is it possible? Better/more software.

Whoever can pump out the most software that is also really good software is going to have the most concrete advantage.

I guess we could judge the systems early by looking at the titles that are going to be released for the systems, even then we don't know if hyped ones are going end up being good or even live up to expectations - and then we've got the sleeper titles that come from nowhere and do exceptionally well.

360 does seem to have some solid titles prepared for launch and soon after, we'll just have to see if they end up any good. If they do turn out to be very good that could give M$ a HUGE advantage given the 360's head start.

I think we'll see later. I've seen specs that show the Ps3 is "Stronger" than the Xbox2. And now for the frist time I see it this way...

A lot of it is marketing hype for sure. I really think that three years from now we'll see...although from intial expectation i give Ps3 the nudge because there are certain fallacies (such as the fact that the xbox has more bandwith...but everything shares the same amount of ram whereas the ps2 has dedicate ram for different tasks so no sharing is needed)

there are lies, damn lies, and statistics.

The memory system bandwidth in Xbox 360 exceeds the PS3's by five times.

Marketing FUD, pure and simple.

The bandwidth of XBox exceeds it that much when you ADD IT together. Which, obviously, you don't, because that's not right.
It does however have enough bandwidth to the EDRAM to make AA basically free, but that's the advantage over, as main memory access is pretty much equal between the two.

This same stuff was posted at majornelson in 4 parts (the first seems to be down, dunno about the others.)
