corolla if you want the gas millage... id just look for a newer civic if you can find one... if not go with corolla or focus

'05-'07 Focus has the 2.0 and 2.3 Duratecs, great motors, more power than non-Si Civics, good fuel economy, very reliable, and the cars are light but have good safety ratings. Does not come with Toyota/Honda tax (people driving up the resale due to brand reputation, which is well deserved imho, but often priced beyond reason).

Get 5-speed obviously, the 4-speed auto is tragic.

Fwiw, I get low to mid 30s combined, and when I go on long road trips I average 40+. I have an '08 Focus, which is really a refresh, but it has the same drivetrain as the '05-'07 models.

'04 and older have the older SPI and Zetec motors, which have less power, less reliability, and less efficiency compared to the Ford/Mazda Duratec.

I had an 08 focus before the civic. Sold that to my mom, a bit overkill for a college student. Plus I had the auto and it was awful. Throttle response was just as bad. My brother has a 05 focus, much better in drive-ability

But I agree, had great gas mileage and is still being pretty reliable

Do you guys think a Del Sol 1993 with only 82000 miles is a bad idea? Wants 4500, got it down to 4200, It was a one owner car and looks like it was garaged and kept in great condition. Seems a bit high but then I look around, most of the del sol's are modified rice burners or high mileage vehicles.
