Time to RMA a HD?

Bad News:

I think it's done
I tried replacing the SATA cable
I tried different molex connectors including one that I knew worked with the optical drive
tried different SATA port on motherboard

I can't hear it or feel it boot up at all which isn't a good sign as we all know

The thing that kinda makes me mad is it worked before my family and I went out to dinner than when we came back my brother tried to boot it but a system disk error came up. It also doesn't pick up anything in the bios

I might try later on my computer just to try although if the drive didn't even attempt to spin I doubt it will work.

Good News:

well, to see the positive in this would be better
#1 it's not my computer ( selfish I know )
#2 It's still under Seagate` 5 year warranty

Does anyone know an estimated amount of time it will take to get a new drive from Seagate If anyone has dealt with them.

not too bad

also I feel kinda insecure about shipping the drive with data on it

What do they do with the drives after they have determined they have failed? hopefully they destroy them in some way.

Don't worry about it either, with the volumes they produce, a lemon is bound to come up once in a while.

I once bought a Samsung drive that started clicking in 2 weeks. I run another Samsung drive in another system, and that one's been fine for 3 years now.

This one was working for about 3 years till tonight....

well, I moved it in the other room last night to take a look at it better and change cables ect

the weird thing is I booted it in the morning just with the power in and I felt the HD spinning inside before it wasn't spinning at all.

I than moved it back into the original room after the 2-3 boot I felt the HD spinning inside and checked in bios it was detected and it booted into windows.

I'd have to say right now I am a bit confused why does it work now same connection didn't change anything just this time it powered before it did nothing. I have a feeling that I will still have to RMA it because I can't have it working on and off but maybe it's not the disc that has a problem but maybe something to do with the power. Do you think they could fix the power issue and still keep the data on the drive and send it back?

Backup the data now and still get the RMA imo.

agreed, I am backing it up now but I am going to mess with it more and see if it continues to boot and work.

I've tried restarting it a couple times and turning it off spaced out and it seems to work every time now. I am considering keeping it because it's not like it made funny noises and stopped working soon after that.

I am going to use it for this week and see if there is any problems at all with it if there isn't I am just going to keep it there is no sense of me sending it back if it's working perfectly fine. I am still confused on why it didn't work before makes no sense?! it's almost irritating me.....

edit: I still have more than 2 years of warranty on the drive.

update: it's been working perfectly for the past couple days
