2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe, 2.0T engine, 93k miles

grinding/whining in gears 1-4 (it's worst in 2-3). at speed, acceleration leads to a head pitched whine.

things it's not because I've replaced these items: serpentine belt + tensioner, idler pulleys, exhaust/turbo heat shields

things it could be (off the top of my head): water pump idler, AC idler, alternator idler, PS pump idler, and somewhere I read it could even be the starter motor

I'm puzzled to say the least. On the plus side, this car is infinitely easier to work on than my S6 (which has been sitting on jack stands for 6 months now :D :D)

Can you "feel" the noise in the steering wheel, floor, etc.?

Hold it up to the phone so I can hear it instead of playing "What's That Sound"

negative. no drivetrain/tactile feedback whatsoever. it's 100% noise.

harder to do with a 6spd ;) it's the high-pitched grind/whine that's in the background noise, but still audible.

If it's engine related, you should be able to hear it in the driveway. Based on your description it appears to be drivetrain related. Is it at a specific RPM? An RPM range? If you are at speed with the noise present and you push in the clutch do you still hear it?

If it follows tire speed, it's after the gearbox.

If it follows engine speed, it's before the gearbox.

If it varies based on what gear you're in, it's the gearbox. Could be a bad bearing.

Yeah, are there any known trans bearing issues? I had something similar with our Suby. 4 new center diff bearings and the noise was gone.

no common bearing issues as far as i know. i do have an aftermarket clutch which may/may not help the situation.

i replaced the trans fluid with no luck, so i think i will have to admit defeat and take it to a mechanic. your theories both make sense.

normally i'd go to a hyundai dealer because my car is still under warranty (barely), but my local dealer blows chunks and is wholly incompetent. luckily i know a good independent mechanic.

update: if you guessed a bearing at the output end of the transmission, you win! according to the mechanic, there were several inches of play between the transmission and the drive shaft (i assume axial direction). either way, not a good sign.

parts are hard to come by (wait time could be a week...could be 6 months), and a full rebuild is super expensive, so i ended up buying a used transmission with 50k miles on it. hopefully will be back up and running on monday or tuesday.
