I got bad news today. My 2004 TL tranny is gone and a new one costs 4k. Apparently a rebuilt one is not an option.

Car has 175k on it. I wasn't really in the market for a new car. Was hoping to stay at my job for a year or two before getting something else.

The rest of the car is working well and in pretty good condition. I am thinking I can get 250k minimum on the TL. Which would last me another 5 years at the least assuming no other major mechanical breakdowns.

I am not in the position to throw down on the Viper/Shelby I have been wanting. Should I just cave and spend the 4k? 500 bucks a month for 8 months gets me a car for at least 2 to 3 years.

I can't touch a decent used car for under 15k right now. The market is ridiculously hot.

Impossible. It's common knowledge that all Japanese cars will go 200k before needing any repairs.

Couldn't you get a low mileage one from a yard?
It's what I did last fall for my aging 98 Cavalier.

Who gave you this estimate? Why is rebuilding not a option?

A family friend gave me the general estimate. He owns a shop and looked up the pricing. He is giving it to a tranny shop that he trusts to get it done right. They are supposed to call me in the next few days to give me an exact figure.

I called Acura and they want 5k just for the tranny itself. It will be more for installation.

I have a Honda mechanic that said he would rebuild it for 1875. However, I don't know how that could be possible for that price. I am thinking he would just pull a tranny from a wreck or junk yard and install it. I am interested to hear what the tranny shop is going to do.

I agree with the sourcing a tranny from a lower mileage junkyard car or wherever and swapping that in. That should be your least expensive option.

Rock auto is so awesome. Nice find

For $2K you can easily get a junkyard trans, have it installed, and have $$$ left over.

Core price of 750, so you have to return the core to them. That could add to the cost. I'm feeling the junkyard/dismantler accord transmission for the OP.

Unless there is something really bad (gear or other "hard PArts" damage, reputable non-franchise shop can properly rebuild (w/mods/updates for around $2K). It depends on the overall condition of the car .

Get a used one from car-part.com and get it installed, should be on the cheap.

If the rest of the car is in good shape, I'd have the transmission rebuilt for ~$2K, or have a low-mileage used trans put in for about the same money. A rebuilt/used transmission is definitely an option with these cars, and if your shop is telling you otherwise, I'd get a second opinion.

Honestly, whether you want to keep the car or not, getting the tranny replaced is key. You will probably lose a lot of value (more than what the cheapest replacement option is) in selling it as non-operational.

I second throwing a used tranny in there. When your tranny gets old and needs to be replaced, sometimes you have to scour the junkyard to find a replacement...;)
