Time to get a new Video Card!!!!

Ok I am probably going to get a Geforce 2 GTS. I am sorta confused as to what I should get though. I am looking strongly at the GTS PRO because of the faster memory. Right now there are 3 or 4 ones that I am looking at. First is the ASUS v7700 32meg PURE GTS. It is a fairly good price but it isn't a pro.

There is also a few cards from MSI I am looking at. First of all, the MSI cards are the cheapest. They have a good price on the Geforce 2 GTS 32 meg and a good one on the 64 meg. They also have really good prices on their 64meg and 32meg GTS PRO cards. Which is probably what I would wnat to get. I am just a little concerend about quality. My friend says the 2D is absolutly horrible on the MSI cards. I havn't been able to find reviews of them either so I am not sure. I would rather pay a little more than get a piece of crap that is gonna crap out on me.

The other ones I am looking at are from LeadTek. They have 32meg and 64meg PRO cards and both are at reasonable prices. They are advertised as having 5.5NS memory at this online store. I live in Canada so I gotta order from Canada. Are LeadTek cards any good? I only see the PRO version advertised, not the regular GTS.

I am just a little confused about memory speeds on the PRO cards. I want to make sure I get one with fast memory that I can overclock well. I am not certain about the speed of the MSI cards. Are they 5.5NS for the pro? 5ns? Any help would be greatly apreciated. I wanna get one this week hopefully.

There is very little difference between the PRO and GTS. Get whatever is cheapest for you cause you won't really be able to tell a difference between brands or GTS/PRO ('cept for maybe some hardcore benchmarking)

The MSI pro is a true Pro card at 5ns while the leadtek is at 5.5ns. So, the MSI is 200/400 while the Leadtek is 200/366 i believe.

I am reading the site right now and there seems to be some confusion as to wether or not this card is actually a PRO card or not. It is hard to find hard stats of the memory speed.

I have not heard of one person with the MSI 831 GF2 Pro say that it had 5.5 ns memory. Everyone says it has 5ns. With all the talk of GF2 PRO cards lately, I think someone would have spoken up if they had 5.5ns memory. (please, correct me if I am wrong) True, GTS and Pro are the same core, but the GTS is memory bandwidth limited, and the Pro "solves" this.

The specs for a geforce 2 Pro are supposed to be 64MB of ram running at 400mhz (5ns), compared to 333mhz for the GTS. Some companies like Leadtek make GTS-Pro cards, which are in the middle. They have 5.5ns ram running at 366mhz. I'd probably try to get one of these, but a real Pro would be even better...

As for the 2D, there's no big difference between all nvidia based cards, but some companies are better. (Elsa for example, but they are hard to find in Canada)

From NCIX, I'd either get the Leadtek with 32MB of 5.5ns ram, or the MSI pro with 64MB of 5ns ram (I'm almost sure that's what it has, even though they don't specify it).

edit--- What I'd do is call and make sure. Some people have gotten Leadtek cards with 5ns, while others got 5.5ns. MSI seems to be mostly 5ns, but I think some are 5.5ns. I agree it's confusing, nvidia should've made sure that the manufacturers stayed with the official specs of the GTS or the Pro.

I have a MSI Starforce 820 (GTS 32 mb 6ns ram) and its' 2D is fine on my 17" KDS AV7-TF at 1024x768. I don't know how it would be on a 19" monitor at 1600x1200, but on mine it is fine. I would presume the Pro cards would be similar, if not better. Although the MSI cards are among the least expensive (as opposed to cheap) I believe they are good quality and I haven't had any problems with mine. Good Luck, Chuck

I'm gonna give them a call. What I don't get is that the guy from pccanada.com told me the LeadTek cards were 5ns while at NCIX they are advertised as 5.5ns.

Most 2D problems don't occur until you're running 1280x1024 @ 85hz and above. If you will be running 1600x1200 on a 21" monitor the 2D on the card will be pretty shabby.

It's possible. They have cards with 5.5 and others with 5ns ram. MSI cards seem to be mostly 5ns, while Leadtek are usually 5.5ns, but it doesn't mean that cards with different ram exists. The cards are set to 366mhz, so they can use 5.5ns or lower...
