time to drop out of engineering school?

OS

Lifer

I work as an engineer and go to class for masters at night. The work is often mind numbing and dry, and I wonder how many years I can last in this field. Getting the same stuff again at school at night makes it worse, so if I don't want to stay in this field for more than a couple years, does it even make sense to continue the education? I'm about 1/3 of the way through the program.

And, you're leaving engineering for what? May I ask?

I haven't figured this out yet, which is why I haven't left. It's work to tide me over until I better know what I want to do.

Well, you must have had some interest in engineering if you've made it this far. Why did you do it in the first place? For all the amazing hot chicks? BTW, If you dont want your job, i'll take it.

I don't really care for school either, it's still one of the highest paid major for a 4 yr/bachelor degree.

My approach might be entirely wrong, since I grew up in a traditional chinese family, who always emphasized math, science, etc. so I don't really know what else is out there outside of this.

I was once ok with it, but then I eventually got kind of sick of it. It's not horrible, but the idea of 10 years to life in this field makes me think I should atleast look for something else.

He wanted to live the glamorous life of a scientist. Fast cars...trendy nightspots...beautiful women...OS designs them all, working out of his mother's basement.

I can't say I've often recommended leaving school to anybody, but if you're not ever going to be satisfied in this field, then what is the point?

However, getting going in your yet undiscovered field seems to be chief task at hand.

lol, you certainly don't get that at work, but outside, it's not so bad.

Coworkers my age do make enough to get decent cars, since it's in the city there's always somewhere to go to at night. There are no women at work, but you just try to make it up outside.

It's just when I have to look at more bits and data logs from simulations, etc. i kind of don't care for, and makes me wonder what else i want to try.

Well here's a question... how much of a drop in salary are you willing to take to do a "more interesting" job?

maybe some but honestly anything more than 10% makes me reconsider since i can otherwise just try to fight it out and hoard money for the next 20 years or so and just cruise after that.

I can understand where you are coming from, though I did finish my part time Masters. It does suck up a lot of time and commitment.
I guess it depends on what you want. I think patent law would be an interesting field for a former engineer, and definitely masters in engineering wouldn't hurt you there.
Of course if you want to go into something totally unrelated, then don't waste your time.

That's another very valid point too. I mean if I stick around with engineering, I will be making 120K or so by the time I am 30. Obviously not MBA or lawyer money, but considering it's an honest 40 hr week most of the time, while MBAs work 60+ based on what I heard from my friend, that's not a bad tradeoff.
