My wife got a new Accord in the fall and it's time for first oil change. What's the go to synthetic nowadays? Some say Mobil 1 still but some are now swearing by Pennzoil Ultra. What are you guys using? I am guessing the Honda OEM filter is way to go?

For an average person it doesn't really matter what you use. Change it regularly and it will be fine.

I typically use OEM filters and Mobil1 for all my cars. But if Pennzoil is cheaper, I'll use that.

The Penn Ultra is a buck more than Mobil1 for 5qt at Wally so though I would give it a shot.

I really don't think it makes any difference. Any brand name will do the trick IMHO.

If it's that 0W-20 oil, there might not be a great selection at Wally World.

Pennzoil Platinum comes in 0W-20 but Ultra comes in 5W-20. According to website my local one has Ultra 5W-20 in stock but no Plat 0W-20.

Will not make a differance. I doubt you will tell any differance between syn and reg oil to be honest.

On my Accord, only Mobil 1 (or Mobil 1 EP) 5W-20 with PureONE or Bosch filters. Mobil 1 filters are good too, as are Wix (or rebranded Wix) filters.

The cost per mile on oil changes for an Accord is so low, cutting corners with cheap stuff doesn't make much financial sense. The OCIs for Accords are long.

Your Accord calls for 0w20 oil. You can't meet this spec with regular oil. It must be either synthetic or semi synthetic to get 0w20. The Honda forum normally recommends Mobil 1 0w20. As for filters, the Honda filters is a mid grade filter. You can go with a WIX, K&N, or Mobil 1 filter if you want better than a mid grade filter.

Any API oil will do, I get whatever is on sale

Virtually all oil is API certified. The question is the proper weight. Your Honda manual states 0W-20. It does not give any alternate weights. If you want to use 10w30, or 10w40 or whatever viscosity you want, you take the risk of being denied warranty coverage should you develop an oil related engine problem.

It is very common for shops or vehicle inspectors to send an oil sample to a lab for analysis.

Personally, and similar to the thought on many Honda boards is that the 0w20 spec is too thin and was only choosen by Honda to get that slightly better gas mileage. There has been a high coincidence of engines using 0w20 burning too much oil in the 10 to 20 thousand mile range. Many are saying to move to the 5w20 Mobil 1 instead. Obviously, if you want to deviate from anything in your owners manual, you do so at your own risk.

I have a similar opinion of 0w20. That crap is thinner than the hair on my bald spot...I have seen consumption issues on cars this year with 20-50 k miles. I personally think oil and filters is so GD cheap today to let a car go 8k miles on oil that thin is like unnecessary.

What's sad is I think there is a very slight difference in fuel economy when using 5w-20 vs. 0w-20.

Go stock oil and put the difference in piggy bank for new tires in 4 years. Don't waste money worrying about an engine that will likely outlast the tranny.

Where is everyone reading that 0w20 is "too thin"?
It's a 20 weight, why would it be any different than any other 20 weight for wear?
The 0w is better for cold starts. There is no reason to not use 0w20. I have it in my car right now and it runs great in the winter. Easier cold starts and the proper grade at temp... Best of both worlds.

Given that the engine would be at operating temperature for the vast majority of its use, wouldn't that make sense? I mean, both oils are grade 20 during normal engine temperature, right?

Wouldn't you expect very little difference since the viscosity at normal operating temps is supposedly the same? Its the "cold" viscosity that's different, right?

Right.

I think the idea of the 0 weight when cold is to have it pump easier and get to the parts that need oil faster when you start the engine.

Although overall I believe there's not a lot of difference between 5W-20 and 0W-20, and you might be hard pressed to tell the difference among brands even with testing.

i use 5w-20 mobil 1 synthetic usually with mobil 1 filter on my 07 accord. i get 0w-20 when it goes on sale and i switch from one to the other from each oil change depending on the availability. I think i will be sticking with 5w-20 ssince it's what my manual states and i think that when i use 0w20 on my car i notice that it burns about half a quart of oil between oil changes.

Go with what the manual says. For me, Mazda is super strict about what kind of oil goes into my car. If I stuck synthetic in my car, I could kiss my 100k mile warranty good bye.

Does it actually say not to use synthetic in the manual? That seems fairly far fetched.

I got rid of my '09 Accord last year, but IIRC it was a 5k interval unless under extreme driving conditions. Was a 6spd V6.

A lot of cars are driven under "extreme" conditions, once you look in to what they mean by extreme conditions.
