Time to change my oil

This will be my very first 3K mile oil change on my car since I bought it used a few months ago but I'm not sure what to get in terms of oil/oil filters. My car has 70K miles on it, so I should be using 5W30, correct? What brand of oil should I look at, and what are some brands to stay away from? I know I don't want $10-a-quart high-end synthetic oil, but I don't want to cheap out.

I also hear that I should stay clear of any oil filters made by Fram because they're crap. Is this true?

EDIT: I forgot to add that I only put about 6K miles a year on my car, mostly city driving.

Just get a jug of Shell Rotella synthetic from walmart for 13 bucks if you use synthetic. Get the 8 dollar jug of regular if you don't. I personally wouldn't make the switch to syntetic at that high of a mileage.

Get a filter from Purolater from Pepboys or something for 6 bucks. The best combination of price and quality in my opinion. The extra 5 for a mobile just isn't worth it.

Do you have an owners manual for the car? It should tell you what grade of oil to use. What brand? Lots of good ones out there. I use Motorcraft oil in my Expedition, and Castrol oil in my BMW, and for filters, I personally like Purolator/Motorcraft filters for my Ford, and either Mahle or Mann filters for the Bimmer.

The weight of oil you put in your car doesn't depend on the odometer. Read the manual or look at your oil cap.

If you're only changing your oil twice a year (and at such a low mileage), you might as well go for the Mobil1 oil and filter combo. It won't break the bank, and it's cheap insurance.

I going to assume why you wouldn't make the switch @ high milage and explain to those who don't know. Because Synthetic is a much higher quality oil it tends to reveal problems that your old oil covered up. After switching @ high milage many people see the breakdown of seals and gaskets. This isn't caused by the synthetic, but is shown by the synthetic. The problem was already there, but the cheap oil could not penetrate through the seal/gasket the way the pricer stuff can.

I use either Castrol or Mobil 1 synthetic in my Toyota & the matching brand filter depending on where I'm getting it changed, but I started using synthetic oil with my 2ed oil change in this car, so I'd suggest you stick with normal oil at the grade your cars's manual says to use.

I prefer Valvoline or Castrol personally, but despite what the people who sell oil want you to think, the differences between major brands are very small.

On the back of every oil brand is an oil rating. It really doesnt matter what brand you use as long as you use the one with the higest oil rating. I use walmart brand oil because it is under a dollar and has the same rating as most high dollar name brand oil. But thats me and Im a cheap bastard. Oil filters on the other had are all made differently and different material and manufaturing is used and with that I buy a good name brand, like walmarts.

Whether you decide to go with dino or synthetic (which may not be worthwhile on a motor with 70k miles) make sure you get a decent filter. I use Wix on all my vehicles as it's a very good filter and relatively inexpensive.

I use full synthetic in my 99 tracker with 150K KM. The engine runs perfect and burns no oil.

Mobil 1 is a good chice for mid range. It's good at cleaning without being the best for a pretty decent price. If you have money to burn though, I suggest Amsoil for a little improvement.

As for filters, Purolator or Mobil 1 is fine.

Can you give me a link about that?

I just remember when my camry was around 130k miles without a leak, I put in some synthetic blend and I started seeing drops after I park it for more then a few hours. Went back to dino and things looked better.
