Time to buy a DVD-R/W drive or is something new in the works soon?

Am I assuming correctly that some new burning speeds may be in the works soon? or some other "advancement".

Hope someone can provide some input.

This question was more to the affect of pointing out upcoming technologies/improvements/features etc... that are on the near horizon.

You're only burning DVDs... how fast do you need to go... are you really that busy, that a few seconds will matter? 😛

Just logically assuming speed improvments... not one to say its needed 🙂
Hence I added additional "advancements"

LightScribe will add some to the cost of a DVD burner...
Plextor is coming out with a slot load DVD burner...
Plextor already has a SATA DVD burner.

Lightscribe does look neat.
Have heard the debate on whether or not it will need special "lightscribe" writable cd's, which would make business sense, but definately will add the premium to a cdr.

Well.... frankly I was aware of those as they are already "out there."

16X is as fast as it goes. Blue Laser has hit a slight and welcome delay while the two camps finally are starting to try to avoid the format war. SO, just get a Pioneer 109 or NEC 3520A and be done with it. They are both less than $70 IIRC.

Or, you can wait for the ultimate burner. In the mean time, Pioneer is working on UV format. It will hold more than double of Blu-Ray (UV -> 500GB max?). That will be a few years from now, but no point in getting something now if there will be something better later, right? 😀

Just buy one.

yeah...in the short term, the NEC 3540 should be out soon (early May I hear)...it just bumps up the DL speed to 8X. And that's probably not even important because you can't even buy affordable 2.4 DL discs now...I don't think the 8x discs will be out for awhile.

DL are costly because they need the money to fuel their project for faster DL burning?

DVD burners have somewhat hit a max.

They can't burn faster than 16x, & while DVD DL speeds may go up, the DL discs appear that they will never be afforable anyway...or they might be, but we'll be using Blu-Ray or HD-DVD by then.

IOW, just get one.

Waiting isn't gonna get you anything much better.

As tecnology Progres, everything new now, is out of date in two month, it is a never ending madness..😕
