I love Alcohol 120% and I'll be damned if any company is going to tell me what I can and can not install on my machine. If I owned Rainbow Six 3, I'd take it back immediately and demand a refund stating that their software won't run on your machine, even with the CD in the drive. Heck, I might go buy a copy, just so I can do that and make a point. This is absolutely a violation of fair rights to the consumer and we should all write UbiSoft a nice email telling them of our dissatisfaction with their latest copy protection scheme.

Ubisoft released the promised Rainbow Six 3 : Raven Shield 1.5 patch yesterday, but they failed to mention their new copy protection scheme.

It turns out that Ubisoft implented code into the RVS 1.5 patch which checks PCs for ANY clone or virtual drive programs and then fails to launch the game if such devices or programs are found. What this has in turn done is disabled thousands of consumers who use programs like Daemon Tools, CloneCD or Alcohol 120% from playing their Ubisoft games even if they have their own physical cds in an actual drive.

After contacting a Technical Support Representative of Ubisoft, I was told that they feel that this is the wrong way to go about anti-piracy measures but they have no say in the matter. They did point out that Ubisoft management claims that they're covered under their EULA but the EULA does not state once that you are not allowed to have virtual drives on your system during play. It only says that you are not allowed to make back up copies.

Irregardless of what the virtual drives or virtual clone programs on your system are for, you will not be able to play Raven Shield with patch 1.5 unless you remove them completely off your system. Again, you can't even play when you have the retail cds in a drive unless those programs / virtual drives are removed. This is a violation of consumer rights - those programs are used for perfectly legal reasons especially at LAN cafes to avoid disc loss.

Try playing Warcraft III v1.13 from an image and you'll see what I mean. Hopefully the good folks at Alcohol with fix this BS ASAP. This isn't the first time virtual drives have been blacklisted and it certainly won't be the last. (Update: The latest Daemon Tools gets around the blacklist, which should mean Alcohol 120% will be updates soon as well. Hopefully Daemon tools will get around the latest Securom protected games, for our vocal minority that makes legitimate images of their games.)

Looks like UbiSoft caved in and released a v1.51 patch to correct their mistake. Hopefully the backlash from the community towards UbiSoft will make other game makers think twice before releasing "patches" which do nothing more than hurt their paying customers, and give the true pirates a good chuckle.

I wouldn't return it - I'd do the American thing. LITIGATE!

Edit: I have a copy of R6-3 right here... Is there a lawyer in the house?

They have the right do that if they wish. If it upsets you it's your right not to purchase their software.

That being said I won't be buying any of their games from now on. I should mention that I won't be pirating them either.

Head out of butt, please. There are legitimate uses for this software. I use it in software package development and creating backups for my legally owned games (I've lost too many originals to damage. If anyone wants to argue over my right to make backups, they can KMFA)

How do they have a right to tell you what kind of programs you have on your computer?

You sir are an idiot! I use Alcohol 120% to make images of all my games for LAN parties (no CDs to hassle with or physically present to have stolen), increased performance (e.g. BF1942 loads maps from CD, so my map loading is from HD with Alcohol running the image...I love the 200x equivalent CD-ROM performance), and every game I have on image is sitting in a CD holder in my computer desk. There are plenty of legal uses for virtual drives and this bullshit move by UbiSoft will do nothing but cause more piracy of their games while alienating their paying customers, such as myself.

You're a retard.

Some may use an virtual cd mounter to mount their warezed cds, but there are others who use their burners to burn said warezed cds. Having a cd emulator is no different than having a burner and a blank cd. Are you going to defend the software companies when they check your system for a burner now too? Many times these emulators load legit copies of isos used to prevent disk loss.

Agreed, I won't be pirating their games, but I sure as hell won't be buying them either irregardless of platform. Too bad for them because I was actually considering Rainbow Six 3, Prince of Persia on PS2, and XIII. There are plenty of other time occupiers out there though may by companies, who don't violate my fair use rights, who WILL get my money RATHER than UbiSoft.

The point is they provided a patch not saying what it was going to do to your computer. If they had released the game with a clear warning that it would not run had you installed on of these programs, that'd be different.

What if with SP2 for XP MS disabled every system running on an AMD processor?

exactly, it doesnt say that we cant use the program only on their games, they are trying to stop us form even having it on the computer... i mean what if i have a legit use (not wanting to lose the cd or go searching for it) for having the software and they say thats not allowed? BS, glad i havent invested in this game

I should have been a bit more accurate in what I posted. I would definitely agree with you that this patch is wrong as a means of updating the game for existing consumers. Ubisoft waited until they were on the hook and then screwed them. I think they should be given the option of a patch without the clone control or a full refund.

However, for new sales of the game I have no problem with this as long as this "issue" is displayed on the box. At least that way consumers are given a choice.
