Getting deployed December 1st. Can't really find a good time to tell the boss I'll be outta here November 12th, to get my stuff together, spend some time with the family and whatnot. I want to give at least a month but I kinda want to ensure that I have a job when I get back from Iraq in a year. Any opinions on the best way/time to tell him, I'm not quitting just a temporary leave.

Thanks
PT

just tell them now....being that you are asking for almost a month lead time to the deployment is up for interpretation by the employer. You have no guarantees if you leave prior to your deployment I believe.

Good luck one of the guys at my job is off next month.

Isn't it the law that they can't fire you because you've been called for duty?

yeah, but does the law include a ~1 month grace period?

that, my friend, is the question.

Oh, tell them as soon as possible.

The government requires employers to keep your job open for either three or five years (I forget which) if you leave for military service. You cannot take a pay cut, get fired, get laid off, get "down sized" or whatever while you're away. Your employer is required to guarantee you a job within a certain number of years.

ASAP. The sooner you tell him the more time he has to make arrangements.

no, I dont think this is the law, I just wanted to be considerate, I am in a supervisor position that will need to be filled at least temporarily until I get back if he promises me a job when I return.

You are protected even if you told them 6 months ahead of time. Tell them today/tomorrow.

Edit: There is no promising you a job when you return you'll have a job with the same pay/benefits. If he doesn't he'll have ol Uncle Sam so far up his *** he won't be sitting straight for weeks.

Thats good news, I just recently got promoted, It would be a shame if it was ruined by this deployment. I figured a year is a long time to keep a position open though.
