lets say i have one CD that has a bunch of audio on it. approximately how long do you think it will take me to make MP3s out of the CD? most likely it's not one big audio piece... it'll be smaller audio pieces/segmants.

thanks!

thanks Leros. i'm not sure what format it's in but i have a feeling it's a bunch of little files. basically, i'm looking at buying a Pimsleur language program and would like to be able to put them onto my iPhone instead of lugging around CDs. i'm going to guess it's in CD audio format...

thanks again!

If that's the case, you can just pop it in your computer, open Windows Media Player, tell it to rip and walk away. Probably won't take more than a handful of minutes.

Pretty quick, faster than the regular playback speed if I had to guess.
CDex + LAME is my preferred combination for MP3 ripping.

pimsleur is a regular audio CD and iirc they have 2 tracks per disc with a total of a little under 60 minutes total per.

and just crappy ripping with itunes or wmp will be limited by the transfer speed of your cd reader more than anything else.

ripping a normal audio cd only takes a few minutes on my PC.

C2D E8400 @ 3.6 Ghz
4 GB RAM
not sure what speed my DVD burner is, probably 48x or 52x i would guess.

Where's the fun in that?

yeah, you guys don't know this yet but i'm actually an undercover operative hired to make sure this forum stands up to geekiness standards. part of that is to continually test you all in your geek knowledge... but don't tell anyone i told you this. i have to report my findings to Anand ;-)

I do it frequently with AudioGrabber. Normal music CD takes about 15 minutes or less. AudioGrabber 1,83 does it with LAME. Easy interfece - free.

Why bother ripping Pimsleur from a CD, when you can just buy it in digital format from the iTunes Store or several other of their resellers AND at a cheaper price than CD format???

that's a good question... and at the time, i did look at the audiobook chips, which i noticed too were cheaper. i guess my main reason was that maybe i could rip the lessons to use on my iphone (especially in the car) and still be able to resell the CD's as "used" on eBay.

but, i didn't think about looking on iTunes... it would save me the time of ripping or copying them from the chips onto my iPhone. thanks!

WMP should be able to rip to MP3 fine. It doesn't have to sound perfect; it's just spoken word. I'd rip to 128kbps MP3, and it shouldn't take longer than 15 minutes per disc.

At an average speed of 20x (3MB/s) it will take just under 4 minutes to rip a CD (700MB).

When I use iTunes to rip music, it starts at around 12x and ends at ~32x. So I'd say it's around 20x average. And pretty much any modern DVD can attain this speed.
