Time for the Scrap Heap

My old car (1990 Acura Integra, 215k miles) died. Pretty much everything on it is juryrigged. It's not worth fixing. It was a good car, but I've now moved on. Now my problem is that I can't find any way to dispose of the car. I had planned to donate it to a charity so they could sell it for scrap, but none of them is interested. I'm having a hard time tracking down any salvage places that will come and tow it for me. Does anyone have any suggestions? I live in St. Louis, if that matters.

Yeah, a long road through hell to get here. :p

Thanks for the feedback everyone. The great city of St. Louis doesn't want it sitting on the side of the road anymore (at least, that's what I gathered from the FOUR parking tickets I got on Friday). I thought I could unload it quickly to a charity, but that didn't pan out, since apparently they only want cars that actually run. :p I'll see if I can find a junkyard that will do the deed. Then I'll be in court to fight the bogus parking tickets after I pay the legitimate ones. Wish me luck!

edit: Most of the junkyards in town won't even take anything older than a 1998 right now apparently. Waiting on a callback to see if I can actually get any money out of the deal, otherwise I'm going to have to give it away to the only one that will take it. :p

You could part it out .. maybe sell the wheels and drivetrain if any of it works .. .some folks need old parts for repairs or in some
cases to modify .. Maybe even sell the fenders, hood, head / tail lamps, if in decent shape. Then just dispose of the shell to a salvage yard for the scrap metal value.

That's how I got just about every part in this thing. :p There isn't a single original part in the car anymore except for the steering wheel. Every body panel is dinged (5 years of living in Ohio will do that to you :p). I replaced the tranny 9 years ago, then the engine 4 years ago. It ran very well for the last four years, but it's too old to justify resurrecting again, especially now that I'm no longer a student.

edit: And yes, the tranny was from a junkyard, while the engine was on E-Bay ($50 +$55 shipping :p).

Sounds like your car isn't worth squat and you have extracted enough life out of it already. Post it on forums and ask if someone want it for $100.

Now that is an interesting idea I did not think of. Auto shop class needs all sorts of project cars for new mechanics and body shop techs to practice on. They just may take it. Check with either the class teachers or the schools admin office.

most high schools actually get decent working cars donated. i doubt they'd want his junk with the limited space that they have.

Find an Integra forum, there's a million of them. Put up an ad saying "1990 Integra in Saint Louis. Free. You pick up." See what happens.

Parts for first gen Integras are becoming scarce. Someone would probably snap it up as a parts car in a heartbeat.

Mine's generation 2. :p

Even the local junkyard that specializes in foreign cars from 1985-1995 won't call me back. I just asked the guy if they would give me anything for it. I didn't say he couldn't have it otherwise, but sheesh. Unprofessional bastages. Looks like I'll have to Craigslist it.

Got a PM about the parking tickets. Basically, I came out to the car on Friday and it had four tickets on the windshield. The tickets were for:
1. $25 - No valid plates (plates were from Indiana, expired at the end of August, but I haven't driven it since then because... it doesn't run, so I didn't think to renew the registration).
2. $25 - Invalid inspection (must have safety inspection to have MO plates. Not sure why this matters since I wasn't driving)
3. $25 - 5 days continuous (apparently, can't park in one spot for five continuous days, despite being a tax-paying resident of the city)
4. $30 - Parked for repairs (can't repair the car on the street, which I certainly wasn't doing, nor do I have any intention of doing it)

I suppose I'll pay the first 3, but there's no way in hell I'm paying #4. I have to make a court appointment to appeal it here rather than just appearing in traffic court. I could probably get out of the others because of errors on the tickets, but I broke the law (even if I didn't know about them), so I suppose I should pay them and not just try to get off on technicalities.

Ah, my bad...I was thinking '91 was the switchover year between the first and 2nd gen. Either way, my statement stands :p What exactly is wrong with it?? Do you have pics??

Oh, and it sounds like the meter maid who tagged your car is a grade-A dickhead.

Report it stolen?

You can always chainsaw it and sell it as scrap.

Fuel pump is dead. Oil jet in the cylinder head is also dead, which didn't cause the failure but I discovered accidentally. Everything else in the car is pretty much jury-rigged, since I was originally planning on getting a real job, so I wouldn't need to keep it so long. Then I decided to get a masters degree. Then I decided to get a PhD. It died five days after I defended my dissertation (so I guess it did get me through college like my dad and I wanted when we bought it :p). I could fix it, but it's too much expense and time at this point, now that I have a real job. I suppose I should take some pics of her before I give her up. Still no luck from the junkyard and haven't bothered with CL yet. More procrastinating...

Yeah, and this is in St. Louis, where we have >100 unsolved murders this year alone. People get robbed on my street routinely, yet they are going around during the day ticketing me. Probably because they're afraid to go out at night when the real crime is going on.

I could report it as stolen, then say that the thief kindly dumped the non-functional car back right in front of my house. However, they might figure that out. :p

The oil jet is probably just a clogged line. The fuel pump might be somewhat labor intensive (don't know really), but is a relatively cheap part regardless. If that's all it would take to get it at least running, put that in the CL ad. Someone with mechanical skills and time (but maybe very little cash) to spare would probably be all over that...

Cheapest I could find a new fuel pump for was $200. The cams are very worn due to the lack of oil in the head as well - visible wear metal on the valve cover and such. It probably has another 20k miles (tops) in it before it needs more major engine work, assuming that's all that's wrong with it. Still, I got the title in the mail today so I'll shop it around and see what pops up.
