Have recently upgraded system and figure it is time to upgrade video card, i have budget of 300-400 $can. I am looking for some suggestions on top cards and brands so i can get most out of my money spent and make my decision easier.

Here are my current system specs:
750 watt Corsair power supply
Asus p7p55d-e motherboard
Intel core i5 750 cpu
4gb g-skill ripjaw memory

Any suggestions would be helpful, i am also replacing hard drive in near future and suggestions there would be helpfull also. Thanks 🙂

I would wait a bit and get one of the new 6xxx cards from AMD.

Agreed. the 5 series has been around since September 23, 2009, the 6 series is literally a month or two away with leaked benchmarks showing huge speed boosts.
It will be a great time to either buy a 6 series, or buy a used 5 series from someone who just had to get the new best thing

@Toyota: Me neither.

@OP: Welcome to the forum! 🙂

Please tell us what card you're using now and what resolution you'll be playing at, so we can suggest a card to upgrade to.

ooh, good idea. and games too.
1. what is current card
2. what resolution is your monitor
3. what are the most graphically intensive games you play (typically first person shooters)

My G80 8800 finally bite the dust a few days ago. And I'm waiting for AMD's new card to make a choice. 🙂
a card like the 6870 would be severely limited by that cpu of yours if it is at stock speeds.

GIGABYTE 470 OC may be the best choice. If budget enough, 470SO would be better of course.

Err, trounced by the Radeon 5 series. 😛

The first Radeon 6 series cards are supposed to launch at the end of the month, with the high end card launching later. Normally, the waiting game means you're always waiting, but they're very close this time.

A 200 dollar 6 series card is going to get you the performance of today's 400 dollar cards.

I hope thats true... I've been OCD on getting a new video card this past month... :hmm:

Then maybe I'll get a $100 card that used to be $200? :awe:

If either the 460 or the 5850 hit that mark, or very close i'll go for it. It the 5830 hits the $90 or less i'll be going for that. Just playing the waiting game now.

I have doubts that will happen SOON. In 3-6 months....yes.

Also I don't believe 6000 series card will be THAT big of a performance improvement....

Wow didnt expect so many responses but thanks for all the suggestions i didn't know new amd cards were out so soon so i will probably wait. And yes i know i forgot to list old vid card just noticed, its geforce 8800 gts ssc edition. And i run at 1680x1080 native resolution. Not gonna take much to upgrade i know its pretty old card.

I would get a gtx460 1gb but wait a few more days and see what happens with prices when the 6000 series cards launch.

it certainly will not go that low. if ATI launches the 5770 replacement at $250 or more than Nvidia may not lower prices much at all.

Agreed, I have this gut feeling 5770 replacement will not even come. They will just come out with $299 6850 and $399 6870.....for time being

We shall see within next few days
