Time for New Main Computer, where to buy? What to get ?recommendations

Ok I have built all my computers since old 386 days but now I?m just not feeling like spending the time getting all the parts and then getting it all to work right etc.

My last computer that I built about 2 years ago now was an XP2700 AMD with AIW9700 that I?ve been using since and I think its time to get new one. So I haven?t really been paying much attention to the latest and greatest so I?m looking to the knowledgeable users of the Anandtech forums for some advice.

I am looking for a new comp that will let me play the latest and greatest games as well as do video stuff as well (editing , conversion, etc) So what kind of setup would fulfill these requirements? I know AMD is generally better for gaming but it comes up behind I?ve seen on doing things like Video stuff so not sure oh how much of a gap we have there. Where would be best price/performance be for this? Where to get this from Dell? Alienware? etc. Oh hell if someone makes a good enough case for putting it together myself and can show me I?m going to save alot of money I might even go that route again. I'm not sure nowadays you can save that much putting it together yourself and + u usually get a nice warranty on a predone system. So I?m sure everyone has a point of view on this so let me know. I?m looking at getting this done in next few months

Thx for what I?m sure will be lots of good advice

What's the price range?

Generally speaking if you don't want to build then Dell is probably a good choice. Don't do alienware as they will charge you an arm, a leg and your first born child to get the thing. HP is ok if you really want AMD.

get the Dell XPS series then...comes with a 2405FPW
not bad performance, but don't hope that you can upgrade later

what is 2405 FPW? I havent upgraded anything really in years, i always wind up building new system after a year or 2, take few bits and pieces from old one for new one. Maybe i upgrade video card but usually its a whole new box. The old ones get passed down to wife, kids, family etc. Any one else have any recommendations please let me know

thx

X2 sounds nice these days. If you build your own, I would suggest you to start from there, since many builders don't stock nice dual core systems yet.

I can't say what service is like because it just shipped today and I should have by Thursday next week. Just put a complete system together for $2500. Got an athlon X2 4800, 7800GTX, 2 gigs ram,160 gig hard drive, all the goodies but no monitor (have a nice one already) and a nice case to boot. 1 yr warrantee with onsite service & free tech support regular hours.

We shall see what the service is like but their prices beat the snot out of alienware.

So X2 thats the new AMD ones, who builds these with best prices etc? how do these X2 perform on the games/video edit-conversion front?

thx for all the ideas keep them coming

your best route is to build it yourself ! if you are too scared too why not just order all the parts online and have a computer store near your house put it togeather for you like COMPUSA ? they usally charge 100 bucks for 2 g i would get this

x2 4400 Toledo processor
Epox nforce 4 ultra motherboard or a DFI ultra D motherboard if you overclock
2 gigs of ram
and a 7800 gt if you game or a reguler x700 pro if you dont

Not afraid to just not sure if i want the headache again, as i have built litteraly hundreds of systems over the years for myself or at jobs ive had. Im just not sure that building myself saves me the money. That is why im looking for people who are more like i was 5-10yrs ago who is into all the minutia and can give a cost/benefit analysis. So if you guys do please let me know
thx
for the info

I looked at the Budget Guides here, you might like the Mid-Range one. Found it very helpful- easy to see how the prices for each piece added up.

Of course after I ordered everything DELL came out with this terriffic sale-a decent PC PLUS 24in LCD that I wish I had gotton instead, even if just for the gorgeous LCD. 😛

get a single 7800GTX for now, 2GB of ram, x2 4400, DFI motherboard (good overclocker), 250GB SATA II drive, a nice 19" monitor. that should be pretty much it. if you've made 100s of computers already, why would you get a headache? i think if you make your own computer (for the budget you're looking at), it'll be around 30% cheaper to make it yourself. so a $2000 computer you make will be like $2800 if you buy it premade

which guide was that? and what dell sys deal where u talking about with the nice monitor? I aleady have a 21 CRT i use now but if the LCD ones have gotten good enough to play the FPS stuff on im not against upgrading to one.

just always seems run into one bug or another getting all the parts from various people to work right, that and im very busy with work, family, kids etc and time can be more value then money if its enough. Money i can always make more of.

keep the ideas coming

The Guides are right here, if you look at the top right of the page. 🙂
Here's the Mid-Range one-
http://www.anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.aspx?i=2535

I pretty much followed it to make sure the pieces would be compatible.

As for Dell you should keep an eye in the hot Deals forums here, people tend to post when a particularly good deal comes up.
I remember seeing a Dell PC deal for less than 1k that included the 24 in dell widescreen LCD.

ok well not to much love for getting premade system so far. Recommendations so far are
7800gtx - By who?
2gb ram - Any specific type?
AMD x2 4400 or 4800 ? benefits?
DFI MB or Epox? which one?
Dell 2405 LCD - Is this good for FPS games?
250 gig HD? which one and why ?

Burners ive got a benq 16x dual layer external one so prob not big priority. What might be good internal dvd? Any other recommendations? Please keep the ideas going

thx

Vinman

7800gtx - BFG or EVGA
2gb RAM - Corsair, Patriot, OCZ, Geil, Kingston
AMD x2 4400 - can easily be OCed past 4800 specs and save you a couple hundred bills
DFI MB
Dell 2405 - Hell yes
250 gig HD - Seagate, best warranty and reliability.

Seasonic S12-600 A03

X2 4400+
Corsair TWINX2048-4000PT
DFI Ultra-D

Nice ending sig line... My favorite rendition is from Starship Troopers.

Dizzy: My mother always told me that violence doesn't solve anything.
Jean Rasczak: Really. I wonder what the city founders of Hiroshima would have to say about that. You.
Carmen: They wouldn't say anything. Hiroshima was destroyed.
Jean Rasczak: Correct. Violence has resolved more conflicts than anything else. The contrary opinion that violence doesn't solve anything is merely wishful thinking at its worst.

ya just one of my favorite sayings. Thx for the info those look like some good parts, those good prices or just some you pulled as examples? What kind of case for all this new stuff? my old case is big thermaltake monster with window etc and like 10 fans in it, makes the room want to lift off 🙂. Dont really care about windows etc for new system. just want something efficient and good at keeping everything cool. Any recommendations for that? keep the info coming? still looks like no one really thinks the off the shelf from dell, etc is worth it.

The point im at if its going to save me say 500 to build equiv box myself to dell or someone elses gaming box ill prob build it. but if in the end its only like 100 or so its worth more to me to have it done and warrantied and me save myself a weekend of building. installing. etc. Anyone have any good info on that? any sites with good comparsion maybe of equiv boxes built yourself and the off the shelf ones?

thx
for the info

I only post the best place to buy from that I know of.

And speak of the devil...

Here's your case
Cheap. Cool. Quiet.

The Seasonic S12-600 and Antec SLK3000B are a lovely match for easy on the ears computing.

Dell computers. For when you can't find the other door stop. I honestly can't remember the last time I bought an off the shelf PC.
