I need a new harddrive. I have been using IBM's for a long time but havnet really read up on the latest. WHat are your opinions on the newer harddrives? When are the ATA 133 drives coming out?

ATA133 drives are OUT

like Maxtor D740x

benchmarks show the new western drive are good (if you get the 8mb buffer one...that'd even be better)

Maxtor had been very good to me. The last four systems I built had maxtor's 2 30gb, 2 40gb and one 60gb. But those WD with the 8mb buffer kick ass also.

I like Maxtor too
I have one of the D740X and it's good, but it's a little noisy.
I think that if I was getting a drive now, or if I could change my mind, I would get a seagate barracuda IV
I stay away from IBM's, WD's and Fuji's...

This should help you in making an informed decision :) It's a good read too!

If I were to get a new HDD, I'd go for the Barracuda IV 40gb since it's relatively quiet, and its almost as fast as the ATA133 Maxtor D740X.

Any IBM 60 GXP.

ATA 133 drives are a waste of money unless you just want bragging rights. Even ATA 100 drives can't live up to their potential.

"almost as fast"

Make that not even close. It's the second time you've tried to tell people that, do you even own either hard drives? I have both, and I can tell you the D740X leaves the Cuda4 in the dust when it comes to access times; not only that, the D740X is an overall better performer. And I recommend reading StorageReview instead of GamePC because of their testing methods are more precise.

Waste of what money? I didnt know it cost extra money to get ATA133. Last time I checked, Maxtor hard drives are cheaper than IBM.

Nope, sorry! I own a Maxtor 40gb 5400rpm drive that's absolutely silent. I'm only telling others the info I get from reviews.......

Ok, I just want to say that you should check out StorageReview, their name speaks for themselves, they are the authority in storage. To anyone needing advice for hard drives and other storage products, read StorageReview, you'll find them very helpful.

I second that valuable piece of information.
