I'm almost expecting a bunch of apps to break when the new run time hits.

Its definitely one of those situations where I'll not be trying to update first, I'll let the user reports come in first.
A lot of apps are still being made compatible with 2.x given how slow Gingerbread died out.

Maybe L's rollout will be quicker, but you can bet apps will be kept 4.x compatible for a LONG time. For example the Facebook app and many other aging apps would probably be far better if they just ditched 2.x support now.

From what I understand these improvements come without any changes. I heard that Tumblr guy talk about it on the All About Android podcast, they didn't change anything in the code and scrolling went from crap to amazing on Android L.

Its all about ART. If the app works with ART, BOOM free speed boost. If it doesn't, well... get ready for a bunch of one star reviews until you do. I don't think it will be like the long slow drive away from Gingerbread. You can have ART support and still be backwards compatible.

The real lag will be the year plus it takes apps to adjust to Material Design.
