last night i was happily watching a movie from my HDD when it froze up on me. i restarted my comp and before it got in windows the HDD just sat there and made some noises that...arent normal. it wasnt QUITE the 'click of death' that i have heard so many times before, but it sounded like the HDD would lose power, and keep trying to spin up, over and over again until i turned it off (just to be on the safe side). tonight i switched the power connector between my HDD and CD-RW/DVD combo drive, and here i am typing this message. im kind of happy that it wasnt my HDD dying on me, ive had so much bad luck with HDDs in the past...poor data.

is it time for a new Power supply?

its a 350w (dont know name of it thou)

drives:
13gb
120gb
CD/RW/DVD combo

fans:
2 80mm sunon
i think maybe my CPU fan also

sorry i cant provide more information, ill open it up in the morning and get all the good info for you.

Edit: I have MBM5 out, and heres the #s it gives me (though of course, i dont know what any of these mean)
core 0 @ 1.81v
core 1 @ 2.50v
+3.3 @ 3.40v
+5.00 @ 4.86v
+12.00 @ 12.25v
-12.00 @ 0.00v
-5.00 @ 0.00v

something is very wrong with that vcore, 2.50v is way too high for a cpu, youd kill it in minutes. Some MBMs are freaky tho so i dont know for sure if that number is correct. Also the 2 0.00v readings mean there is no juice flowing through those lines. Again it could be the software, i suggest going into your bios and get the readings from PC heath.

If your BIOS gives those same readings shut down and dont turn it on again until you have a new PSU!

No
When that happens it's usually the CPU
Signs if it was the Power Supply:
1. Mobo + CPU are literally fried (too much power sent thru them)
2. PS doesn't even start (obvious)
3. Smells funky, like a foul metallic stink or burnt toast (because it fried a lot of mobo components, has happend to me)
4. Maybe a HD or a PCI card is not working as well

funny that you should mention the CPU. about 2 weeks ago it wouldnt boot up and the mobo told me 'processor might be damaged or not seated properly'. note that this was totally random, and i hadnt touched it (cpu) in a while. i reseated it with a new layer of arctic silver, and it worked fine.

i am working towards an upgrade with completly new everything (so not really an upgrade), but its too far away if things like this keep happening the way they do :( ...i dont notice any smell, and except for these two incidents, all seems to be working OK (if thats the word i want to use) ill check ill check out what the bios has to say, and edit this post with the info

edit:
Vcore: 1.79v
2.5: 2.5v
3.3: 3.39v
5: 4.88v
12: 12.18v

ANOTHER EDIT

a bit off topic from the thread title, but would the P.S. problem have anything to do with me not being able to burn CDs? im using nero 5.5 thou i dont think that has anything to do with it. im not sure if its the HDDs or what, but while in the middle of a burn, the comp will do either 3 things. RESTART (totally random), FREEZE (bleh), and BSOD. i have on one attempt gone through 3 CDRs before giving up. it also only seems to be data CDs, cuz audio works fine. i must also say thou that my data CD had sources from both my C and D drive and maybe thats the problem? (please help if my explination did any good)
