I've been using an old 17 inch monitor I got from work, it was okay until a few days when it crapped out. Had to setup a spare 15 inch I had and it's killing my eyes.

I want to get a nice crisp high resoultion (at least 1600x1200) screen.

CRT's are fairly cheap now, so I could go with a 19" - but what is the best model out there?

Or I could go with a 15" lcd, is a reduce screen size but much crisper precise picture - what is the best model out there? Any good deals on a 17" lcd?

I bought a MAG Innovision 17" CRT over 4 years ago and it's still going strong. Very nice sharp picture. :D

Of course, Sony makes good stuff, and I keep hearing Samsung mentioned whenever monitors come up.

Generally Samsung is better for CRT's. When i used to look up reviews they'd rank Samsung as #1 most of the time. THey are also quite cheap. YOu also can't go wrong with Viewsonic or NEC. Sony is way overpriced, but their monitors look nice!

There's a 19" Samsung at Newegg for about $200. Unfortunately, it only does 1600x1200 at like 65Hz or something. Heck, my old CTX 17" does 1600x1200 at 75.

I first got the KDS 19inch Xtreme Flat monitor at office depot. After using it for a day, I started to miss the vibrant colors of my old 17inch monitors. So I returned it and went down to my local computer store (Intrex) and got a NEC Multisync FE991SB (black case) for 269. Now this 19 inch monitor is awesome for games (the superbright feature really does highlight the graphics), and it does pretty good with text. Graphics is where it really shines. Only problem I have with it is that I cant get the NaViSet software to work with it, which allows you to adjust the monitor from the display properties. Other than that its great monitor.

Detailed Specs from the website.

I like Iiyama monitors. I have a 19" one. Vision Master Pro450.

I have 2 Sony screens. One 17" e200. Both crt monitors are flat. Both look great. Sony OSD faster to use then the 3 buttons on the Iiyama.

My other Sony is a 23" LCD which cost and arm and a leg. Is 16:10 so almost widescreen but is great.

Is it really worth buying a monitor online - with all that expensive shipping?

I don't know about you guys but at 1600x1200 @85Hz on my NEC FP955, the text is just damned small. I like my letters big and easily gulped by my eyes: 1024x768. But that's just me :).

If you find a nice deal at Dell.com, yes it is since usually its a certain discount + free shipping. That's how I got my monitor shipped to me overnight for free :Q.

That looks like the monitor I'm going to buy. Although graphics are nice, the main purpose for this new monitor will be desktop publishing. So a combination of still text and graphics. That's what I need to optomize for, especially with my ever increasing eye strain. You say it's onlly pretty good with text - anybody here recommend another brand/model specifically for sharp text? I love my work laptop, it's a Dell latitude 840 with 1600x1200 resolution, and the text is perfect. But I don't really have the money to dish out for a large LCD.

Those MAG monitors kick ass! I have had a 17" MAG monitor for over 6 years now and it just keeps running!
