Time for a new mattress: Spring or Memory Foam?!?!

So after about only 4 years our $800 ripoff Simmons BeautyRest, Shakespeare Edition (not joking) luxury, firm, basically just "epic" mattress is beginning to sag in the middle and it's fucking up my back.

Has anyone here went to the memory foam style? I see there are some moderately cheap memory foam mattresses on Amazon for cheap. I'm sure 50% of the reviews are fake, but consumer satisfaction with mattresses is always low.

It seems to me like the way to go is memory foam which should last longer or just replace the spring mattress every 3 - 5 years. So then you might as well go cheap as possible.... Ugh.... these things are impossible to research.

I learned a while ago that cheaping out on a mattress is a bad idea. I understand that money isn't infinite (even on ATOT), but waiting a few extra weeks on your current mattress will be much better than spending less on something that is crap.

A quality mattress is worth it 100% of the time IMO. Buy the cheapest box spring you can though, as they are hold overs from a time long since forgotten in mattress technology (basically, a material stuffed bag) and are only around because modern bed frame design hasn't kept up (and I would imagine the profit margin on a box spring is incredibly high).

The latex foam mattress was the most comfortable thing I have ever slept on.

My back seemed to relax after a few minutes and i would have a sense of weightlessness.

Foam is the way to go. We switched from spring to Tempurpedic foam two years ago, love it. I sleep like a log.

Finally replaced my 8yr old Bob’s discounted furniture all natural latex mattresses 2 months ago with a Beautyrest Legend pillowtop spring mattress from Sleepy’s. They basically let me name my own price, so we got a good deal, but I am sure they still made a lot of money from us. The Legend line is their own store line and a step below the Beautyrest Black label line. I was told that you are supposed to replace your mattresses every 6-8yrs, as all of them will sag over time. Sleepy’s don’t even sell Latex mattresses anymore because of that. All these 20-25yrs warranties are BS. Any stain will void the warranty, what does stain have anything to do with sagging, nothing really, just a way for the manufactories to not honor the warranty. Anyway, my back was sore the first night I slept on it, the second night was a lot better, no sore. I guess my body was so used to the old saggy latex mattress, and it took a day or two to adjust to the new bed.

Latex foam FTW! I can't believe people still buy spring beds after using a foam one.

I just got a tempurpedic cloud lux breeze and while it is expensive, damn it is a good nights sleep. There is a thin polymer layer embedded within the top soft foam that controls temperature better than the models without the breeze feature. While the dealer couldn't budge on price due to price fixing by tempurpedic, we did get 4 tempurpedic pillows comped as well as a decent mattress cover to prevent the nasty mold conditions that can happen with some foams due to no ventilation. Out the door 6k$ including delivery. Hurt the credit card once, but fixed my back and neck issues in 3 days and nice sleeping ever since.

These mattresses from Amazon are well reviewed:

Interesting article about those guys.

"How a Startup Created the No. 1 Rated Mattress on Amazon"

[edit] They were on HN also: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6900625

I'm using a memory foam matress. It's great but it's not high end so it does retain heat more than some other matresses. Just something to keep in mind while you're shopping.

Great responses. This confirms my thoughts.

I think I want to try trout a foam bed. The main thing I want to make sure then is that there is some layer that prevents you from getting too hot.... or if there is some special sheet/cover to add that can help with this?

This sounds like what I want, but the $6k price tag is absurd. I make OK money, but I cannot do this. That's crazy. Even if I made 6 figures I still wouldn't, COULDN'T do this.

Anyone have any specific links to specific queen sized foam beds with something that prevents heat retention? Going to take a look and possibly purchase tonight.

+1. Bought a cheap Ikea mattress and I got what I paid for: Not a lot. Just bought a new bed frame and I'm getting a memory foam to go with it. No more cheap mattresses that hurt my back and neck.

The mattress market is a joke and the cost often does not correlate to quality. Even if you think you are saving money buying something "On Sale" you aren't. If you buy a brand name mattress you are going to get ripped off. The extra money goes to commissions, marketing, and executive pay. If anyone cares enough I can find sources.

Your best bet is to buy nice latex from a third party mattress manufacturer. See my link above for a pretty exhaustive list of ones in the US. For reference, I got a double sided, high quality, queen latex mattress for $900. Try to find ANY store that offers double sided mattresses anymore.

On a side note, memory foam is considered a relatively cheap and somewhat inferior material. I would strongly recommend that anyone try latex foam before settling on memory foam.

Haven't tried latex, but I got a memory foam mattress topper a few years ago for $300? You don't need any other parts to the bed with this topper, other than a pillow. The only thing that I will mention is if you go with memory foam, get a decent one. Not a $50 egg carton "memory foam" POS.

Try to get something that "breathes" if you go with memory foam because every once in a while it can make you hot / sweaty, but it only happens to me once or twice a year when it's noticeable. I could see it being a lot worse if you don't run AC in summer, or run your heat pretty high in winter. It probably has more to do with body heat, usually when it happens to me it's a night when I can feel massive amounts of heat escaping my head; I'm generally a colder person.

I don't know if I sleep better or not. I still don't have a problem sleeping on anything, hard or soft, cheap or not. Makes me feel nice and comfortable, though, so it's a win for me.

Memory foam pillows on the other hand are pretty damn nice and can be a pain to sleep without once you get used to them.

I have a herniated disc from a injury when i was young. Over the years, I have tried every type of bed out there and found them all uncomfortable.

For the past 2 1/2 years now, been sleeping on Serta Raised Air Bed with Never Flat Pump. Has not gone flat or punctured so far and i sleep on it daily.

It's the most comfortable sleep thus far and easy to move/clean under. Don't over inflate it or the seals will leak, learned this the hard way.

TBH when I say memory foam I pretty much mean any kind of foam. I'll keep an eye out specifically for latex foam.

I guess something like this:
