Hey guys, I have an old Compaq Evo N610c that's just used in the kitchen to look up recipes, and also for light browsing any time we're not in the computer room. Sometimes we connect it to the HDTV to watch Hulu or Netflix on TV.

I recently discovered (via Memtest) that it has bad RAM. I'm trying to decide if I should replace the memory or buy a new, cheapie laptop. This one has a Pentium-4M 2.0 GHz processor and maxes out at 1 GB of memory. I think it shipped with a 4200 RPM drive. It won't run Windows 7, at least not Aero.

I have no idea how powerful or weak a Pentium 4M/2.0 GHz processor is. Is it ridiculously underpowered by today's standards? It feels pretty slow, but maybe some of that is due to the slow hard drive and 512 MB of memory that it currently has. Will XP Pro speed up any if I increase the memory to 1 GB? If it's $50 for new memory versus $350 for a new laptop that can run Windows 7 and boot up far more quickly, maybe I should replace the laptop.

What do you all think? Thanks in advance!

For what you do, that laptop is fine. Get the memory.
