Time for a new HDD

Haven't paid attention in this area for a while. Looking to upgrade to Windows 7 and think it's finally time to replace my 74gb Raptor.

I'm looking at the 640gb WD Caviar Black as my new main HDD. For the money, is there anything that's a better performer?

The Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB drive is $5 more on Newegg. It's a faster by a decent amount on read/write tests, and for $5 you get a decent space upgrade. Not like 640 is bad or anything, but 1tb is damn sweet for 80 bucks. I'm about to order this drive myself Monday. Suppose to be quite and run cooler than the WD's too. The access time on the WD's a good bit lower, I'm not sure what kind of performance difference that makes compared to the F3 though.

I got an F1 Samsung drive for my Windows7 build. It is the fastest HD I've ever had. It leaves the two WD 500GB drives in this existing computer, in the dust.

The F3 is a beast of a drive. The drive is becoming so popular that it is out of stock in most places (both the 500GB and the 1TB) and the ones who have it have increased the price. I got an additional HD103SJ (F3 1TB) from ewiz last week whe it was $78.99, it is $84.99 now...

Yeah was gonna order one yesterday from Newegg and they're OOS 🙁 Directron has them for a few bucks more, but I don't know how they ship HD's. Newegg's not the best at shipping HD's from my experience, but better than some of the others I've seen. Hope 'Egg gets them back in stock soon.

directron has never done me wrong on shipping with the things i have bought from them but i have never bought a hard drive from them.

I ordered an F3 a couple of weeks ago and wanted to get another one recently, only to see that they're OOS at a lot of places. I think I'll be getting a 2nd one for my boot drive.

They should ship them a little better than the egg 😉
I haven't got a HD from directron, but the closest thing to that I recently got was a DVD burner, and it was very well packed. certainly better than the egg 😉

Any of you have experience with Samsung's RMA process? I've had nothing but good experiences (well, as good as a HD dying can be lol) with WD RMA, but am willing to switch if Samsung's RMA is comparable.

i did the same thing, tossed the 74GB raptor for a caviar black. u can't go wrong with the black line.
it's quiet too, i think the raptor line is on the verge of extinction (pun intended! 😀)

I have a 640GB WD Caviar Black and they're pretty fast and almost dead silent. I have mine in an Antec 1200 and it's virtually inaudible even though I have every fan at minimum besides my GTX260 which is at its preset 40%. I was thinking about buying another one, but this talk of this Samsung Spinpoint drive sounds interesting. Also, the WD Caviar Blacks have a 5 year warranty.

I noticed that the Green hasn't been mentioned, and I guess it's intentional.
But really, is the difference from WD Green to Black scarily noticeable?
I don't have a clue, never had a WD.

I would guess main issue with Green is latency (instantaenous seeks).

High platter density can make up for slower speed in terms of sustained transfer rates (at least compared to older 7200 rpm hard drives), but I believe instantaneous seek is going to be noticeably slower.

You typically do get lower noise, lower power consumption, and lower heat, which may be important if you are a silent pc enthusiast.

I'm pretty sure the WD black drives still have the lowest seek times, and that will make a big difference as a boot drive.

Or a tree hugger.

The Samsung F1 is terrible at multi-threaded reads, and I don't know if they fixed that with the F3. Most people judge HDD speed by looking at the seek latency and sequential read speed (which is not a good real-world indicator). I'm sure the F3 is faster with seq. reads, and the F1 had great write speeds, but For an OS drive, I am placing my bet on the WD Black drive as the better choice with their dual-processor controller and solid all-around performance. I don't have any issues with heat with mine, and they have a good reliability reputation. The Samsung F3 is new and has no reliability rep.

As far as the Green line drives - Nobody wants a damn hippie drive as their main HDD.
