I've owned the G7 and the MX Revolution, and I have to say I like the tilt-wheel on the G7 (same as G5) far, far better. I'm pretty sure the G9 uses the same tilt-wheel (side scroll) as the MX Rev. It feels very loose and sloppy, and the scroll speed varies even when I fix it in the software.

I wish the Razer mice had tilt-wheels. They are far smoother to operate than side-buttons, in my opinion.

I'm probably going to replace my broken G7 (wireless is intermittant) with a G5.

Well the G9 was (still is?) on sale for crazy cheap (~$50 IIRC).
Personally, I <3 my MX Revo. Tried a Razer Mamba and didn't like it.

I for one don't like tilt wheels. My G5's wheel developed lots of play after a while... feels sloppy now.

My favorite mouse of all time was the MX518. When I replaced it with the G5 (gen#1) I missed it immensely, but the G5 quickly grew on me. About 2 years ago I replaced it with the the G5 (gen#2).

You can't lose with either one.

by the way, !Hot Topic!

The black logitech logo on top is covered with cheap paint which comes off after some time of use and makes the mouse look ugly. The beautiful finish attracts dirt and grime, and after a few months the mouse looks disgusting no matter how much you clean it. On top of that, y mouse feet are now coming off too... and that only after about two years of use.

This mouse might be a delicate work of art, but a rough and tough workhorse for a gamer with sweaty palms it is not!

I've had mine for 2 or 3 years now, and all 6 of my feet are still there. Who cares if the logitech logo wears off? Do you bitch that the keys on your keyboard are wore off too?

The mouse itself is tough and works great. I've had mine yanked out of the USB port (lots of cord stress due to how I have it routed), it's been slammed into the underside of the desk, and it's still ticking. Highly recommended.

I've also got an MX400 that I use on my laptop, and it's not even close to the MX518's performance.

g9 or newer.
no point buying a mouse as old as the 518. you have to realize that logitech considers their driver features part of the product. so many new driver software features don't appear on older mice. the 518's driver software is down right barren when compared to say the revolution or g9. there are very few settings, nothing like the application specific auto profile switching super customizable stuff that comes with the newer mice. 518 only had the dodgy "game detection" feature which i used to turn off because it got set off by too many things in regular use. when i look at the 518s settings its like a mouse from a decade ago...its got nothin.

Consider also that the G500 is on it's way out too. It's like a cross between the mx518/G5 and G9x.

I'm an owner of a G7, two MX518s and two G5s (Gen 1 and 2) and feel wise there isn't much difference between them all. G5 generation 1 shows the least amount of wear and tear if you care about stuff like that...

I just ordered a Deathadder, anyone know where I can find the most precise firmware without prediction in it?

I own a MX510, two MX518s and a G5. I like all of them really but the G5 has a better texture for gaming IMO.

I think the latest it comes with is the best. Apparently there was some trouble with a few of the less recent versions but everything I read said to stay with this.

So how is your current g5 doing? Any freezing problems like with your last five mx518 replacements ? I am hoping mine doesn't get any like my previous three.
