The two principal differences discovered were that our ancestors had more prominent features, but their cranial vault - the distance measured from the eyes to the top of the skull - was smaller.

Dr Peter Rock, lead author of the study and director of orthodontistry at Birmingham University, told the BBC News website: "The astonishing finding is the increased cranial vault heights.

"The increase is very considerable. For example, the vault height of the plague skulls were 80mm, and the modern ones were 95mm - that's in the order of 20% bigger, which is really rather a lot."

He suggests that the increase in size may be due to an increase in mental capacity over the ages.

by plague skulls does he mean 13th century european? I would assume that this is entirely due to wither a different historical "race" being sampled or nutrition during pregnancy and after birth being the cause for growth, not evolution.

Bingo. We have a winnar. 650 years is not enough time to have made large morphological changes. Better/more food will change people's size though. The introduction of milk into Japan's diet has increase the average height there in just 50 years!

Hmm good observation. The Neanderthals had lots and lots of hair and they weren't too bright, and the aliens have no hair and they're smart as hell. Maybe if I shave my head I can increase my SAT score 50 points?

..being a baldy for many years I can say from experience that there's nothing worse then a sun burn on the noggin..wear a hat if you mow it off.

Maye the popularity of the C-section also prevented babies w/ large heads from dying. Back in the old days, women w/ small hips is almost like a death sentence if you get pregnant...

Nowadays you see petite chicks all over the place... not that I'm complaining.
