I can't decide on whether to go with the airport extreme base station with external hard drive or straight to the time capsule to back up my mac. Anyone do either and have pros or cons one way or the other?

Are you going to use time machine on it? Time Capsule is supported out of the box for time machine. A usb drive via airport is not.

That was the plan. To use time machine for backups. I thought there was an update to the airport express a few months ago to allow time machine to use a hdd with AEBS.

I stand corrected. I'd go with the airport then, the time capsule is overpriced and you can't do thing like hook up a USB raid device to really protect your data.

Airport Extreme + USB Hard Drive also lets you upgrade the size of the storage device when you find that it isn't cutting it anymore.

It is a nice router (Tyranicus has one) but I wish it had a 4th ethernet port.

Thanks for the input. Airport Extreme it is. Should I buy new or get the Apple refurbed for about $50 less than new?

As long as you make sure that the refurbed is the dual band one then you should be golden. Apple refurbed is good as new with the same warranty.
