I'm been trying to find directions specific to the Direct Touch Heat pipe coolers. So far I haven't found anything. Do I apply the TIM any different?

Not that it probably matter to the topic, but I am using Tuniq-tx-2, and have a E2180.

Thanks...

With the Direct Touch style coolers I understand that it's best to apply some TIM to the heatsink base itself to fill in the gaps around the heatpipes. With TIM on the CPU alone it will squish into those gaps and not enough will remain to allow a good interface.

I recall reading a review on either the Xigmatek or Kingwin unit where the reviewer actually tested the performance difference in applying TIM in various fashions.

I plan to put the TIM as three lines to the three heatpipes at the xigmatek end (one line per heatpipe, of course), and then just press the xigmatek to the CPU. That's the contact area where the heat really goes thru, right?

I don't have either of the parts yet though, waiting for the Q9450.. and I have no experience when it comes to putting hardware together. So clearly I have no results.

jdkick, can you find a link to that review?

The method is called tinting and was really common back in the day when heatsinks had really really crappy bases. Basically you use a finger condom or plastic bag over your finger and rub thermal paste into the base and then wipe off the excess gently, gets TIM into the grooves then you use the standard method on the IHS making sure you don't put too much on because it won't need to permeate the heat sink base.

I've always believed that being a dirty old man was more a state of mind, then an indication of age.
