wich they did. but they let common sense fly out the window. Once he said it was a clock and confirmed. they should have laughed and let it go.

but again they went to far. they arrested him and suspended him from school.

Over a clock. that they knew was a clock from the start.

I agree.

I accept the initial mistake (if the reported stories are correct).

But later on he should NOT have been charged with making a fake bomb and/or the charges should have been dropped, once they found out what has really happened, here.

An electronics enthusiast (which he seems to be, of any race/sex/age/weight/height, etc etc) can/should be able to take their stuff, anywhere within reason, without fear of prosecution.

From the article: “It could reasonably be mistaken as a device if left in a bathroom or under a car. The concern was, what was this thing built for? Do we take him into custody?”

Have Texans really no clue what a clock does? Has word about the invention of a time telling device not reached Texas yet?

It's like a caveman discovering fire. The first reaction is fear.

Pretty certain if this had been a blonde haired, blue eyed girl named Susie it would have been a non-story.

He was clearly profiled based on name and color. Sucks, but it's what it is. There's just some things you need a situational awareness about. He learned the hard way.

Oh, it would've been a story! You'd see it all over Facebook - #girlpower #STEMrocks #youcandoit #lifeforthemoment #girlsdoitbetter

I think Texas is the new Florida.

It seems half the people here with their Raspberry Pi boxes they bought off eBay would get arrested down there.

I think the states have a elaborate hoax to see who can do the dumbest shit. Until the rest of the US finally says "ok. Texas/Fl you are out of the union" then someone will say LOL punked!

nope. that's fine. It doesn't have a timer. Everyone knows bombs have a bright digital timer to count down until it blows up.

duh.

OK, only the ones with upscale Raspberry Pis with the screens.

that might do it. but then they would think its a EMP or a hacking tool that you hook up to a computer and hide.

If you enlarge the picture (I supplied), and look carefully at the bottom right hand corner. You can see a moderately sized, metal box.

Depending on how he went around with that thing. That box, could help make it look like a bomb. He probably has got batteries in it. But others would NOT know this.

It could have been a real bomb. We are not all experts in what a real bomb looks like.

People who make bombs don't go to their teachers and show them the clock they built. Nor would people who make hoax bombs.

I'm NOT sure about the exact details. But it may be that the English teacher happenned to see it (and was NOT shown it as such). The English teacher was worried it might be a bomb. So she escalated it up, ultimately ending in the police arresting (presumably) him.

What should've been a beautiful moment of congratulatory pride quickly turned into a full-fledged nightmare for Ahmed. His English teacher, who decided the clock looked like a bomb, notified the principal, who called campus police, who called the county police. They then interrogated Ahmed, arrested him on the spot, and took him to jail.

So on Sunday night, he quickly put together a homemade digital clock (“just something small,” as he casually put it to the Dallas Morning News: a circuit board and power supply connected to a digital display) and proudly offered it to his engineering teacher the next day.

So he showed it to his ENGINEERING teacher! who told him NOT to show other teachers. smart man. knows the other teachers are morons.

During English class, the clock beeped, annoying his teacher. When he brought the device up to her afterward, she told him “it looks like a bomb,” according to Mohamed.

oh..a English teacher blew it into the twilight zone..

Irving Police Officer James McLellan told the TV station that school officials were worried about the device.

“Clearly, there were disassembled clock parts in there, but he offered no more explanation than that,” McLellan said. “A lot of these details that the family and he have provided to you were not shared with us yesterday. He was very much less than forthcoming.”

Because he told you it was a FUCKING CLOCK he made. what else was he to say?

When the boy said "It is NOT a bomb" and/or it vaguely appears NOT to be a bomb. Maybe they should have asked that Engineering teacher or someone similar, to confirm it is a simple electronics hobbyist project.
Then all these issues, would have been stopped. He would have not been arrested, and everyone could have forgotten out it.

There are terrorists about. So it would seem to be quite reasonable/sensible for the occasional security check(s), to take place.

At the end of the day, he had brought in a potentially dangerous looking device. At least to some (technophobic) peoples, eyes.

I don't think that just because an item or items, on a person are searched/checked for being a security risk. E.g. At airports, while boarding a plane. Should mean that we have to massively play the race card.

If any item(s) is suspicious, we should be able to alert the authorities, regardless of the sex/race/religion/age/weight/height/social-class/standing/education-level of the individual(s) involved.

If this is not satire or hoax, then I do believe its time to sue the school and police department...

Why ?

Surely they have the right to get worried about a suspicious device, which might be a bomb ?

It is just an innocent mistake.

As far as I can tell.

Other people seem to think that it is a racially motivated attack on the person.

If a young, white girl, walks into the school, with something that looks, much like a viable bomb device.

They will still contact the authorities.

E.g. Maybe a terrorist group gave it to them, and asked them to take it to the school.

That's the reason this shit happened in the first place.

English teachers don't decide what is or isn't a bomb, if they make the wrong choice there will always be someone who wants to sue them. Only option is to do what happened here. And, once it gets to the police it's the same deal. If someone thinks it looks like a bomb then it either is a bomb or it is a look alike device. Either way the kid's going to jail so his fate can be played through the system.

Homeland Security has taken custody and he is being sent to an interrogation facility for further questioning. Thanks to the Patriot act he can be held indefinitely until the threat has been subsided.

The English teacher did what they thought was right. Then the police invistigated. The kid said it was a clock. wich the police confirmed was NOT a bomb. They even said it looked like a dismantled clock.

At that point they should have ended it. No bomb found. he never said it was a bomb and always told them it was a clock.

Where this goes into the twilight zone and everyone has problems with is that they arrested him and suspended him. That shouldn't have happened.

Oh and they are still thinking of charging him. though that won't happen now that its in the national news.

Why ?

a innocent mistake? no not at all.

Being arrested and suspended is NOT a innocent mistake. NOT when they KNEW it was NOT a bomb and they are thinking of charging him with a crime. This could have potentially ruined his life.

sure they would contact the authorities. the school has no real choice. Nobody is saying anything about that (though its still fucking idiotic).

Any police officer with a lick of common sense would have talked to the kid, had him explain his "contraption" and then sent him away so he could tell the school administrators they were fucking idiots and then went and got a fee coffee at his choice of location.

To anyone who says "Yeah, but it COULD have been...." and "Better safe than sorry" are dumb asses too.
