TightVNC question...does it always take up this much CPU usage?

I've got TightVNC setup on a P4-2.4ghz machine right now, and everything seems to be running extremely slowly. I decided to check, and it looks like the VNC server is often taking up as much as 90% of the CPU usage...is this normal? How can I get it to turn down?

I'm connecting to it from a Linux box running the TightVNC viewer, if that matters, but I don't think it does. Everything else I think is default install.

Edit: When no one is connected, WinVNC is taking up 0% of resources, as it should be. It's only a hog when I'm connecting to the box.

I've run it on boxes far slower than a P4 2.4, & it ran just fine (dual Celerons @ 366).

I never monitored CPU usage, however it ran fine...

Doesn't seem normal to me.

If you have it set to capture the entire screen, then it will take a lot of CPU time when a viewer is connected. Set it to only capture the active window, and maybe the one the mouse pointer is over.

That has to do with the update handling, right?

I changed it to poll foreground window, poll console windows only, and poll window under cursor. Let's see how that goes.

That seemed to tone things down a bit. Do you guys recommend locking out the local mouse and keyboard when logged in?
