Tightening up Z-5500's subwoofer by stuffing socks

i read somewhere that stuffing socks into a sub's bass port will tighten up the bass. i havent tried it yet but is this method effective? will blocking the port damage the subwoofer?

It is a method used by many a professional Audiophile (albiet with audio foam). By plugging the bass port you are keeping the air pressure in the sub more "constant" resulting in a "tighter" sound. I've got no clue how the physics of it work, I just know it does. And your sub should not be damaged by doing so.

Simply, the "seal" although not a great one in this case, does not allow air to escape(mainly during low frequencies) and this creates a pressure that pushes the cone back to its original position. This results in less linear movement of the cone. This results in the "tighter sound"
