Tight VNC question

Is it possible to use the Tight VNC program to remote control a PC that is located on the other side of a DSL modem ?

Here is the problem. I have four computers at home. I can use the Tight VNC to view and remote control my four computers that are connected to the internet (Verizon DSL) from computer to computer BUT I can NOT get access to any computer that is on the other side of (outside of home) the DSL modem NOR can I get access to my home computers from say my work computer. Is this possible ?

I have called Verizon and their statement is that they do NOT support this program (tight VNC).

What good is this program if I can not do remote access from my home computers to computers on the other side of my DSL or if I can not do remote access from outside my home to within.

Is there some kind of combination IP address string for the DSL modem and the IP address of the computer that is needed for this to function correctly ?

You need to forward the ports that Tight VNC uses. Google is proabably your best friend to get this done.

Default VNC ports are 5800 for web viewer and 5900 for viwer applet.

But an ssh tunnel would be a really good idea here 🙂 You'd only have to put one port through on the router and you can move the vnc forwarding around to various machines on your lan. Course, you'll have to have a *nix server of some type in the house...

If you're interested in doing this, it can be done with cygwin. I'm currently doing this, so i know it works.

You need to forward the ports that Tight VNC uses. Google is proabably your best friend to get this done.

Well, I tried port forwarding and it did NOT work, in fact, when I setup the port forwarding on the Verizon DSL modem, then I could no longer even use the Tight VNC to view from computer to computer within my apartment, whereas I could before.
