TigerDirect Rebates

I am interested in getting the following case:
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=40&threadid=1750789&enterthread=y

As soon as someone says that the deal is not good because its a TD rebate, its hard to gauge whether that advice is good or not. TD may have developed a bad reputation but that doesn't mean that they haven't fixed things.

I have seen the same thing over and over again about tigerdirect not honoring rebates. But when I do a google search, all I find is one specific incident (lets call it the Soyo incident) that everyone seems to complain about.

Also, I have seen that TD is now using a new rebate center.

Although there are still lots of complaints about TD rebates, I haven't seen anything recent. Anyone care to shed some light on their recent rebate reliability?

Finally, I am taking a poll. Is there anyone here that did a TigerDirect rebate other than the Soyo stuff, made copies of everything, and sent the rebate by certified mail, and still did not get their rebate??? I realize that certified mail and copies shouldn't be required, but I am doing it, and am really interested to see if someone didn't get their rebate even though they they did everything possible to document.

If your TD rebate worked out lately, respond as well and indicate so. I'de like to have some idea of what the likelihood is that i'll get my rebate if I do this.

i did a TD rebate on some ram through OnRebate.com and it worked fine, although it was very slow arriving.

if i cared about the time it took to get the rebate, i might consider someone else. i used to think their prices were great, but this was only because I hadn't found Anandtech and the great deal-seekers here.

I have ALWAYS avoided TD, due to reports of bad rebates and stuff.. But recently when I was writing my $200 OSX on INtel article I bought a processor from them. Not only did the rebate arrive QUICK, but they also have the option to have it sent to you paypal address.. (for a $1 fee)

Pretty sweet in my book. My views on them might be changing!

NEVER buy from tigerdirect...it's all about the principle. for those who have been around fatwallet and anandtech long enough, you will know about the 'AMR Long Distance' fiasco back in 2002, where basically TigerDirect tricked buyers into giving up their credit card information to a third party, and unauthorized charges started showing up on people who had bought from them.

they have attempted to clean things up, but i will never buy from them again

here's a link to the old thread back in 2002 from Anandtech Hot Deals:

here;s another link with more info:

here is the most comprehensive archived link at fatwallet...at that point, FatWallet admins removed the TigerDirect store from their active promotions

BBB link for TigerDirect

Based on BBB files, this company has an unsatisfactory record with the Bureau due to a pattern of unanswered complaints. Specifically our files show a pattern of complaints alleging dissatisfaction with product quality, failure to deliver promised goods, service issues, misrepresentation in advertising and marketing practices and the failure to address and overcome the basic cause of complaints brought to their attention by the Better Business Bureau.

Avoid TD like the plague

I always here this, but never accompanied by any first hand accounts of fraud

That's exactly why I started this thread. Everyone says to avoid them like the plague, but no first hand accounts. So far not one person has mentioned having any problems with their rebates.

did you read the above links? many anandtech and fatwallet members have been scammed by TD. even teh fatwallet admin got an unauthorized charge!!

yes, TD has definitely tried to clean up their act...but i have chosen not to purchase from them after that whole AMR Long Distance fiasco

I believe in the Easter bunny more than I believe in TD rebates. I dealt with them twice (I'm a slow learner) and receieved nothing but apathy, ignorance and aggravation.

GeneValgene: I read them. Yes, there's always the possibility that they might do something fraudulent. I am only making one purchase for a relatively inexpensive item, and will monitor the status of the credit card. But that's really beside the point....if you look at my original post, what I am really asking about is how TD handles rebates. It's good to know that they have a bad rep and a bad hsitory with the BBB, and I appreciate the comments. But i'de like to know where TD stands today and how they handle rebates.

So you didn't get your rebate? Did you document everything? A little more info please?

I did not get my rebate, no. This was 2-3 years ago. I'm afraid that I have no documentation left. I put in several calls to their customer service (aka a voicemail box that I sincerely doubt was ever checked) and eventually gave up.

Well that's just great. My dad just ordered a desktop from them for $250 minus a $50 mail in rebate.

I'm beginning to interpret this as "Tom Donahoe" more and more everyday. Bills fans will know what I'm talking about.

I didn't think Tiger had been doing their own rebates (OnRebate) for that long. Year maybe?

Anyhoo... The key is this: READ EVERYTHING CAREFULLY!!!

There's always a rub, and they're counting on that rub to be rubbed to not fulfill the rebate.

Example: Two rebates, one item. Include copy of invoice for each item. That's a copy of an INVOICE people... NOT a rebate receipt with no purchase prices on it. This apparently happens with Fry's rebates ALL of the time. They give you a rebate receipt.. not really sure what it's supposed to be good for other than a "gift receipt."

Example: Send in both UPC codes from box if there are two UPC codes. I saw this on a monitor once. The box had a bar code on each side. They wanted both bar codes so people wouldn't send the rebate in twice. Once with each barcode.

Make sure that YOUR correct information is on the invoice and that it matches the receipt. I had this problem with Circuit City. The clerk put my address in wrong and the wrong address printed on the receipt. They wouldn't fulfill the rebate unless it shipped to that address. Lucky me, the address was the office for an apt. complex I was staying at, so I just told the office I'd get some mail there and I'd check in to pick it up. 😉

Bottom line: Never rush a rebate. If everyone mailed in their rebates and mailed them in correct to the tee, the companies that offer these rebates would go BROKE! When I do rebates I do them one at a time and only fill them in and seal up the envelopes when I have quiet time at my desk to focus on what I'm doing. Christmas is the WORST time to do rebates because you're so busy with everything else, you're going to screw up what you send in or forget to send anything in at all. That's why there's more rebates in December than any other month of the year. 😉

And if it's a BIG rebate... GET TRACKING. Not delivery confirmation either. Send it FedEx or signature confirmation. A $100 rebate is WORTH an extra $5 or $10 bucks to make sure it gets to the destination!!!
