IF he retired TODAY, would he still be considered one of the greatest golfers of all time?? would he be looked at like Gale Sayers was for the bears? an INCREDIBLE talent.

Look at the numbers he's already achieved more than MOST of even the top 100 golfers of all time.

Just his one season alone, winning 3 majors and SETTING COURSE RECORDS at all three puts him in contention.

This is partly in response to LordJezo's RIDICULOUS thread, but it is also a celebration of JUST how good Tiger woods really is.

has there been ANY other single sport figure or team as dominant as Tiger has been throughout his short career?

Kelley Slater. Yeah, I realize you don't know who he is, bu he's been just as dominant in his sport (professional surfing).
He won the world tour in 92, then every year from 94-98, for a total of 6 before he retired. He's competing again this year and currently ranked 2nd.

my problem is i have no frame of reference from that sport.

i can tell you in golf, a pro feels he's really accomplished something if he finishes #1 at the end of the year just ONCE in his career. to do it 5 or 6 times is PHENOMENAL and to do it 6 years CONSEQUTIVELY is absolutely mind boggling. and to do all that BEFORE The age of 30?

Plenty of people like Tiger in other sports I think ...

maddux?? no way, he isn't even the best in his era. Clemens was clearly better.

Pedro would be a better example, but he's been injury prone.

it's not JUST that Tiger was #1, it was how far ahead he was of everyone else.

Winning THREE majors in ONE year and SETTING THE COURSE record EACH TIME.

What could POSSIBLY compare with that?

Wayne Gretzky > 9 time Hart trophy winner (8 in a row from 1980-1987, then 89) - Given to the league's most valuable player.
AND won Art ross 10 time (1981-1987, 1990, 1991, 1994). - Given to the leader in points at the end of the season.

Well, professional surfing is only in it's 28th year now, so it hasn't been araound very long (not much newer than the NFL though, really). Mark Richards won 4 times in a row in 79-82. Three other people have won twice. Every one else who's won has done so only once. Here's a list of winners. Granted, it doesn't have as long a history as golf, but you wanted a frame of reference :)

I'll give you gretzky.

but to put Tiger in the same class as Gretzky before the AGE of 30 in GOLF where there is very little drop off with age till after 50 or so, is WOW.

Maddux is the only pitcher EVER to have 16 consecutive 15+ win seasons. I'd certainly put Clemens in there too but his last few years with the Sox and his first year or so with the Yanks wasn't so great. Maddux was just the first who came to mind.

exactly, and that's why it's important. the only person that really compares with tigers as far as the records he is setting and is on a pace to set is Byron Nelson, but that was so early in the sport, SOMEONE had to set the records. it's a much greater achievement to break so many records after there have been soo many more players.

i can't put any single baseball player in the same category as Tiger to his sport and Gretzky to his.

Why not? How about Cy Young? Or Barry Bonds? Or Pete Rose? Or Hank Aaron? They all seem as good at Baseball as Tiger is at Golf to me ...
