dudes at work want me to run pilot on tiger...but! they didnt give me a machine with a dvd drive to do it with.
i have a machine with a dvd drive that i can "use" but i cant install the software on it, i can just use it to do a clone, or install the software to a drive.

i have a few ideas with the equipment we have lying around:
1. make a tiger iso from the dvd...but is there any way i can mount it from a firewire drive that will allow me to install it?
2. install it to a drive in an enclosure hooked up to the dvd machine, then pop that hard drive into the dvd-less emac (but hard drives take slightly longer on an emac than i was looking to take on the install itself)

otherwise...get an external dvd?
any other ideas?

Put the machine in FW target mode, and install using another machine. Otherwise, you'll have to do a network install.

I'm pretty sure you can mount iso's under Mac OS X, but I don't know if you can install from that.
Net install OS X using OpenBSD and OpenDarwin. I haven't read it, but I'm guessing a second OS X machine should work just as well as OpenDarwin. I haven't seen an OS X bootparamd application, but it probably exists somewhere so you won't need OpenBSD. Linux should work just fine too.

The site appears to be down however, so here's a google cache of it. If that doesn't work, let me know. I'll keep the window open. :)

You will not be able to install Tiger from an ISO/DMG, as a restart is required to boot off the DVD to install.

Oh yes, that is true. I was thinking of general applications.

i was also thinking of installing it to the fw and perhaps making that an image to "restore" from netboot.
was wondering if anyone had tried these and found one more simple than another.

Putting the machine in FW mode is the easiest I think. Reboot the machine and hold down T, or go into Systems Prefs/Startup disk/Target Disk Mode.

Other than the fairly easy options mentioned above, you can also order install CDs for a nominal fee from Apple.

Like PatboyX said.

You can use the iso image to install Tiger. I friend of mine did it on his iBook. He created another partition on it, and "restored" it using the iso image (actually, I think it was a dmg, not sure though). He changed his startup disk to the second partition, and booted into Tiger setup that way. You could use an external firewire drive to do it that way.
